The current tally of entrants in the 2009 Los Angeles Poker Classis is just under 700. With 690 players in the field the top 63 will make the money with first place being over $1.6 million. The number has a little more time to grow, though the 700 mark will be tough to reach. Alvin “alsmooth” Zeidenfeld and Scott “R_A_Y” Montgomery won’t be among those making the cash this year at the LAPC.
Zeidenfeld (left) was able to minimize his losses after flopping a straight with a redraw to a flush, only to lose to a bigger straight. After dropping about 8k chips in that pot Al was down to around 12k and not many hands later was all in for his last 7,650 on a board of Q

with about 8k in the pot. His opponent went into the tank for a while before finally calling and showing the A

. Al had pocket nines for an open ended straight draw but an ace on the river was of no help to him, leaving him as one of the early eliminations.
After making a final table here last year and going on to become a member of the November Nine with his final table at the WSOP Main Event, Montgomery has been one of the hotter players in poker, but the LAPC in 2009 is not going to be anything he wants to add to his poker resume. He was elininated during the second level of play.
After two full 90 minute levels the field has lost 45 players off of the 690 entrants, leaving 645 players coming back to play the third level with blinds of 75 / 150. In the early goings Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul has built his stack to over 30k and an early double up put Noah “fourUhaters” Schwartz around 40k.
