Yerushalaim Chipping Up by Rich on 07.05.09, 9:24 pm

Ben “98 Mute” Yerushalaim (pictured at left) struggled during the first two levels of play, floating under the starting stack of 30K. Finally, during Level 3, Yerushalaim gained some momentum.

We don’t know the exact numbers, but Yerushalaim called a raise in middle position and so too did a player in the blinds. The flop fell K96, the big blind checked and the original raiser put in a continuation bet. Ben raised the action, the big blind shoved and the original raiser tank-folded. Yerushalaim thought a bit before calling and showed 66 for a set of sixes. To Ben’s surprise, his opponent turned over K9 for just two pair. Neither the J on the turn nor the T on the river changed anything and Yerushalaim doubled up.

A few hands later the previous original raiser, who claims that he folded aces, was heads up with Yerushalaim. The board read J9596 and Ben checked. His opponent bet 3.5K and Yerushalaim thought for a long time before making the call.

“Ace nine,” his opponent said, but it sounded like ‘ace high.’

“Nine?” Yerushalaim asked.

“Yeah…OH!” his opponent exclaimed rolling over A8. “I thought I had a nine.”

Ben tabled 44 which was good enough to take the pot. Yerushalaim’s opponent stormed away in anger while Ben organized his new, 47K stack.

Over in the Orange Section of the Amazon Room we found Tom “titantom32” Braband betting 2.6K from the button on a flop of A43. The player in seat two called and the turn was the 9. Seat two checked and Braband bet 4.8K. Seat two called again then checked when the 3 fell on the river. Braband checked behind and for a moment neither player turned over their cards. Braband went ahead and showed his J8 and his opponent proceeded to slam his AQ onto the table. He raked in to pot before heading over to the rail to tell his friend about calling Braband’s bluff.

We didn’t join this hand until after the turn, but Tristan “Cre8ive” Wade filled us in on what we missed. Wade said he raised to 800 under the gun with A-K. The cutoff, button and big blind all called and the flop was AKT. The big blind led out for 2.6K and Wade made the call with his two pair. The turn was the 5. This time the big blind bet 10K, which represented to the majority of the 17K or so left in Wade’s stack. Wade said at this point he knew the player well enough to know he was beat and folded his A-K face up on the table. Nevertheless, it had to ease his mind a bit when the big blind went ahead and showed his Q-J.

Joe “cada99″ Cada (pictured at left) is among today’s early chip leaders midway through Level 3. We caught up with Cada increasing his stack to 77.7K during a hand in the past hour. A player raised to 800 at 150/300 blinds and Cada flatted on the button. The flop brought AQ5 and Cada’s opponent check-called a bet of 1.5K. He checked again on the 4 turn and Cada fired out 2.6K. Call. The 9 fell on the river and again Cada’s opponent checked. Joe bet 7.3K and the other player counted his chips, shook his head and tossed them in for a call. Cada tabled his AT for the nut flush and his aggravated opponent mucked.

We found Clayton “clayton_27″ Newman involved in back-to-back key pots. First, we noticed some commotion over at his table and saw that Newman and another player were all in for the player’s 17K stack. Clayton had KK and his opponent held AA. The Q76 flop was no help to Newman but he hit gin with the K on the turn, leaving his opponent drawing to two outs. The 6 river sealed the deal and Newman won a big pot.

He lost all of it back on the very next hand — and then some. A woman in middle position raised to 1K, Newman called on the button and Ylon Schwartz called from the small blind. On the T63 flop, the woman led out for 1.5K, Newman called and Schwartz folded. She checked the 2 turn and Newman took control by betting 4.8K. She then check-raised to 20K and Newman quickly called. The T fell on the river and Newman’s opponent bet 6K. He tossed in a call and saw that he was beat by her A4. According to his twitter, Clayton had a smaller flush. He was left with 63K
