Xuan Xed Out, Fisler Doubles by Court on 10.15.08, 3:06 pm

In the pot that ended up being his last hand, Xuan “X2then” Nguyen raised preflop from early position and was called by chip leader Matt Matros. An aggressive Matros has been involved in a lot of pots, applying pressure preflop and then taking gambles when the price is right. Pat Pezzin moved in over the top of a Matros opening raise and after some thought Matt called the additional 144k with the A3 and was able to make a flush to bust Pezzin with his pocket tens.

In the pot with Nguyen (left) the flop came QJ8 and Xuan led for 60k and then called when Matros made it 180k. With the 5 on the turn Xuan checked and Matros moved all in, making Nguyen decide for his last 320k. With a set of jacks Xuan made the call and was up against the KT for all kinds of draws. The 9 on the river made a flush for Matros and eliminated Xuan Nguyen in 20th place for $43,745 CAD.

Earlier Xuan was involved in a pot preflop with Jason “JP_OSU” Potter. After some back and forth raising there was around 250k in the pot and Potter moved in for 170k more. Xuan thought for a while but ended up giving up his hand, sending a large pot to Potter without a showdown and prompting Marc “Myst” Karam to comment “Consider it a gift. I would have called with 2-3 offsuit.” Potter was up to 420k after the hand.

In another interesting preflop move Ryan “Gotskillz” Fisler called from the big blind after Todd Sisley moved all in for 131k from the button and Gavin Smith had called from the big blind. The call left Fisler with just under 300k behind and a pot of over 400k in the middle. Both Gavin and Ryan checked the 332 flop and with the 6 on the turn Gavin bet 158k and Ryan folded leaving Gavin heads up with Sisley. Smith’s A8 was well ahead of the 98 of Sisley and an eight on the river didn’t change the way the hands stacked up, adding more chips to Gavin’s growin stack and busting Sisley from the tournament in 21st place.

The very next hand Kathy Liebert opened for 34k and as soon as the action got to Fisler he announced his all in from the small blind. The player in the big blind went into the tank and ultimately called the 290k all in from Fisler. Liebert got out of the way and left the two heads up, with Ryan’s pocket nines in great shape against the big blinds pocket sevens. The bigger pair held up on the Q82KA board and Fisler was able to double to over 600k.

Brian “SN8WMAN” Hawkins and Vivek “psyduck” Rajkumar are both still going strong as well. Vivek has had to fold to some aggressive reraises but still has over 1 million chips and Hawkins is in solid shape with around 700k.
