Took a Wrong Turn in Omaha by Jessica on 06.22.09, 12:04 am

Play in the $10K PLO Championship event was delayed for a good 30-40 minutes as the result of a snafu coloring up some of the chips as players left for dinner break. Tournament staff went to the surveillance cameras to try to sort out how some players ended up or down as much as 40K in chips (to give you some perspective, each player in the event only started with 30K in chips).

Basically, when changing out smaller denomination 500 and 1K chips for pink 5K chips, the tournament staff apparently had a dyslexic moment in which they gave 20K in exchange for a stack of twenty 500 chips and 10K in exchange for a stack of 20 1K chips. Thankfully, the matter appears to be sorted out and play resumed around ten minutes ago, but considering they are supposed to get down from 56 players to the final table today, players were a little annoyed to have a chunk of their day unecessarily wasted.

WSOP 2009 Event #41: $5K NLHE Shootout

Many players in the Shootout event decided to be as efficient as possible with their time and play through dinner break. For some, like Peter “Nordberg” Feldman (pictured left) and Cort “thecortster” Kibler-Melby made quick work of their opponents and advanced, while others like Matt “ch0ppy” Kay and Ryan “youngluc” Young fell just short, finishing in second place.

We had a P5er versus P5er showdown at Amit “amak316″ Makhija and Brent “bdubs3737″ Wheeler’s table, as the two played heads-up for a good hour before the match culminated in the following hand: A short-stacked Wheeler got it all-in preflop with the best of it, holding AK to Makhija’s KJ. The J in the door spelled trouble for Brent, though the Q and 8 that came with it did give Brent a straight draw in addition to his overcard. The turn was the 8 and the J on the river spelled the end for Wheeler while Makhija will return tomorrow at 2PM for Round #2.

While Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier failed to advance at his 3-handed table, both Scott “r_a_y” Montgomery and Andrew “luckychewy” Lichtenberger have whittled their table down to a single opponent. Both hold a slight chip advantage heads-up with Andrew having 80K of the 150K chips in play and Scott having 85K.

WSOP 2009 Event #39: $1.5K NLHE

Mohsin “chicagocards1″ Charania began today as the chip leader of the $1.5K NLHE event but his fortunes have taken a turn this evening. With tablemate Tristan “Cre8ive” Wade inexplicably doing pushups at the other end of the table, Charania raised to 8K with blinds at 1.5K/3K and the player to his left called. On the A96 flopm Charania led out for 9.8K and his opponent called. The turn brought the 5 and again Charania bet, this time 15.5K. The other player quickly called again and a nice pot was building in the center of the table. A9 fell on the river and Moshin bet 24K. His opponent raised to 60K and Charania snap-called. The other player showed {A8 and a discouraged Charania revealed his 9. His stack dipped to 80K.

Darryll “DFish” Fish found himself in muddy water just after the players came back from the dinner break. Fish raised to 8K and big stack Raymond Davis re-raised to around 50K, committing himself to the pot should Fish move in. Darryll did just that, announcing “all in” and Davis called:

Fish: JJ
Davis: A6

Davis took control on the AT2 flop and the turn and river didn’t give any help to Fish, who earned $3,631 for his two days of work.

Zach “CrazyZachary” Clark, Frank “Round42″ Rusnak and Tracey “xtraceyx” Ngyen were also sent home since our last report. Here’s a look at the players still alive with 108 players remaining:

Shawn “sprstoner” Glines - 344K
Kevin “ImaLucSack” MacPhee - 197K
Tristan “Crea8ive” Wade- 188K
Zac “traction” Gilbert - 160K
Mandy “MandyB” Baker - 120K
Alex Jacob - 103K
Adam “Roothlus” Levy - 70K
