Wretchy Takes Gut-Wrenching Hit by Rachel on 06.09.09, 4:47 am

The board read 6642 when we caught up with the action on Dan “Wretchy” Martin’s (pictured at left) table. Just a few minutes before Martin had told us he was up to 71K. Martin asked his opponent how many chips he had before betting 12.3K. His opponent, who said he had around 80K behind, made the call. The river was the 9. Martin bet 12.5K this time and, after some thought, the other player raised 27.5K more. The raise was for the majority of Martin’s remaining chips, and he thought for a long time before making his decision.

“Sorry,” he said to the table at one point, apologizing for taking so much time. “This would be such a hero.” His hand looked to be shaking a bit as he counted out the call and eventually he put the chips in the middle. His opponent turned over KJ for a back-doored flush. Martin tossed his cards high into the air and into the muck and quickly walked away from the table. He was crippled by the hand and was eliminated a short time later when his A6 couldn’t catch up to another player’s A-Q.

Steve “gboro780” Gross, (pictured at right) the top-ranked player on PocketFives, raised to 2.2K before the flop with the blinds at 500/1K. As it folded around to the blinds, Gross admitted he didn’t know the blinds had just been raised from 400/800 when he made his initial raise. Howard Lederer made the call from the big blind and the flop was K82. Both players checked and the turn was the 8. Lederer led out for 3.3K and Gross called. The river was the 3. Lederer checked and Gross bet about 5.5K. After some thought, Lederer laid his hand down and Grossed raked in the pot. He ended the night with 55.6K.

Brock “t soprano” Parker, the new owner of a WSOP bracelet, ended the night with 138.9K. He said it had been a long day because he had trouble falling asleep last night after defeating Daniel Negreanu heads-up for in the $2.5K limit hold’em event for his first WSOP win.

Other end-of-night chip counts:

Brett “threatnasty” Switzer – 183K
Jeff “ActionJeff” Garza – 110.8K
Jay “SEABEAST” Kinkade – 80.4K
Shaun Deeb – 80.1K
Thomas “plzlemmewin” Gabriel – 83.5K
Seth “grtwhitehoop” Fischer – 77.3K
Andy “badgerpro” Schultz – 69.7K
Dan “wildman75” Buzgon – 64.5K
Blair “blur5f6” Hinkle – 60.4K
Josh “JDSmith9” Smith – 31.1K
Andy “BKiCe” Seth – 30.1K

WSOP EVENT #18: $10K OMAHA H/L

Justin “BoostedJ” Smith’s rollercoaster day has come to an end. With the board reading A778, Smith checked to Phil Ivey who bet. A player in middle position called and Justin put in a second bet. Ivey made it three bets, the player in the middle folded and Smith made the call leaving one bet behind. The river was the 3 and Ivey bet. Justin called all in, and Ivey turned over a monster: 8823 for eights full and the nut low. Smith observed the board for a bit before finally mucking and hitting the rail.

It seems like every time we look over at Annie Duke she has more chips. She boasts three large towers of orange 1K chips and an equally impressive tower of pink 5K chips. In total, she has 300K in front of her.

WSOP EVENT #17: $1K NLHE LADIES EVENT

There are still 14 players left in the $1K ladies event, but unfortunately Jamie “mmmwawa” Kerstetter is no longer in the field. We missed the details, but she was eliminated earlier this evening.
