Wolpert Wins! by Rich on 06.17.09, 12:49 am

With a smile from ear to ear, Leo “SuperfluousMan” Wolpert, pictured left, posed for pictures with his brand new WSOP Gold Bracelet.

On the final hand of the $10K Heads-Up NLHE Championship event, Wolpert limped the button and his opponent, John Duthie, checked his option. Duthie checked the T53 board and leo fired out a 120K bet. Duthie check-raised all-in for his remaining million chips or so and Leo quickly called, tabling 35 for a flopped two pair. Duthie showed 10-2 for top pair. Even though Wolpert held the lead, he waited to celebrate until the turn and river came J then Q to guarantee him the pot and the victory.

It appeared to take a second for it to sink in with Wolpert that he just won his first bracelet, but as soon as it registered he let out a loud “Yes!” and ran to the rail to receive hugs and congratulations from his huge group of supporters. The rowdy railbirds erupted in applause and cheers at their friend’s accomplishment and Leo was all smiles as he made the rounds around the perimeter to shake hands with all of those who came out to see him play.

We can only assume those rowdy railbirds have now whisked their friend away for a night of much-deserved celebration. Congratulations Leo for surviving nine heads-up matches against the likes of Dustin Woolf, John Juanda, Matthew Woodward, and Duthie to take down the eighth P5er bracelet of this WSOP.

WSOP 2009 Event #32 $2K NLHE

Eric “whitE_mAmbA” Ladny (pictured right) was still in shock, holding his hands up to his mouth when we approached him. “I pretty much have every chip in play now,” Eric joked. His rail was hounding him after the hand. “If I lose you guys can make me quit.” Ladny just raked in a 450K chip pot, the biggest so far in the tournament.

It all started when a player in middle position raised and both Ladny and another opponent called. The flop came KQJ and Ladny led out for 19K. The original raiser bumped it to 60K and the player on the button folded. Ladny shipped the rest of his stack in and was snap called by his opponent. Eric was in dire straights with T9 against AT. The Q opened a few doors for Ladny. Now a club would win it and an ace would chop. Everyone was silent, choked by anticipation as the dealer wrapped the felt and spiked the 4 on the river.

Pandemonium ensued.

Ladny sprinted away from the table in disbelief. With his eyes wide open, Eric slowly crept back to the table. A floorperson took him aside and issued a warning for excessive celebration, but even he had to let it slide after such a scenario.

Before that miraculous hand, Ladny busted Bryan “BParis” Paris. Eric told us that Paris opened for 8.2K and he raised to 23.5K in the next seat. When the action got back to Paris he shoved all in and Ladny made the call with his A-K. Paris showed AQ. The flop was Q-J-10, giving Ladny broadway. Paris turned a club draw, but couldn’t hit it on the river. Ladny scooped the pot and built his stack to about 230K.

Anthony “D1rtyR1v3r” Nardi called Michael Binger’s cutoff raise to 7K from the big blind at another table and the players saw a flop of QQ9. The player in the small blind, who had also made the call pre-flop, checked and Nardi bet 12K. Binger made the call and the other player got out of the way. The turn was the 9. Nardi led out for 15K and Binger call again. The river was the 6. Nardi checked and Binger bet 28K. Nardi shook his head and decided to fold, dropping down to around 45K at the time. He had managed to chip back up to around 75K when we last saw him, but he has since tweeted that he lost a 150K flip with A-Q verus an opponent’s pocket jacks meaning he is either crippled or eliminated.

Carter “ckingusc” King got all his chips in the middle before the flop against Peter “Nordberg” Feldman. King showed AK to Feldman’s QQ. The board came T72T8 and King was eliminated. Feldman appeared at have about 140K after the hand.

Clark “snake8484″ Hamagami (220K), David “DavidP18″ Peters (200K) and Jack “doctor_fun” Powell (100K) are also still in the field, but Christian “charder30” Harder has busted.

WSOP 2009 Event #33 $10K LHE

David “Bakes” Baker was fighting back in the Brasilia Room, but failed to maintain a healthy stack for long. After dropping back below 20K, Baker called a raise in the big blind at the 2K/4K level. The flop was T87, and Baker check raised the original raiser with just one more bet behind. His opponent put in the last bet and David called. “I flopped good,” Baker said as he turned over T7. He was in good shape against JT, but the J on the turn changed everything. The 3 on the river closed the door sending Bakes to the rail.

Barry Greenstein and Lex “RaSZi” Velduis still remain, sitting with 70K and 60K respectively.

WSOP 2009 Event #31 $1.5K HORSE

There are six players remaining the in the $1.5K HORSE event. Bryan Micon and Shannon Shorr are both still in the field looking for their first bracelets. At the last break both Micon and Shorr had 620K, which was good enough for second in chips.

WSOP EVENT #34: $1.5K NLHE

Jeff “jeffboski” Sluzinsky was in the big blind with a raise to 1.7K in front of him over in the $1.5K NLHE event. He checked out hand once and then again and thought for a while about what to do with his ~9K stack. Eventually he looked at his opponent and asked if he had pocket jacks. He didn’t get an answer, but decided to muck his hand.

Sluzinski, who was convinced the raiser had either A-Q or pocket jacks, went so far as to make $100 bet with the player seated to his right. Sluzinski asked the guy to tell whether he had had pocket jacks or A-Q (without specifying which one) or any other hand.

The man said he would say whatever Sluzinski wanted to hear drawing laughs from the table, which includes Chris “SLOPPYKLOD” Klodnicki. The prop bet was called off and play continued.

Recent eliminations include Cliff “JohnnyBox” Josephy.

Here are a few other chip counts from around the room:

Chris “moorman1″ Moorman – 20K
Chris “SLOPPYKLOD” Klodnicki – 12K
James “mig.com” Mackey – 12.5K
Jared “The Waco Kidd” Hamby - 9K
Brent “BHanks11″ Hanks - 8K
