Ray “WirdPair” Foley (pictured at left) had never sat at a WSOP final table before today. Now he owns his own gold bracelet.
Foley saw his tournament life flash before his eyes when he got it all in against Brandon Cantu holding A-7. Cantu had A-Q, but the 558 flop gave Foley chop outs and the 6 on the turn gave him straight outs. An 8 on the river chopped the pot and kept Ray alive. Foley found himself all in again a few hands later holding 10-10 against Cantu’s K-9. The king high flop spelled doom for Foley, but a ten on the turn shot him back into the lead. The river bricked and Ray stole the chip lead.
On the final hand the two saw a flop with a jack high board. Cantu led out and Foley announced all-in. Brandon went into the tank and called with J-7, which was behind Ray’s Q-J. The turn and river blanked, and Foley was the last man standing.
For his performance Ray will receive $657,969 and, of course, a WSOP gold bracelet.
WSOP 2009 EVENT #42 $2.5K MIXED
The game was PLO. The flop was K
8
6
. The bet by Jimmy “gobboboy” Fricke was 15K after a check by Rami “arbianight” Boukai. Boukai made the call and the turn was the 3
. Boukai led out for a pot-sized bet and Fricke announced all in. It was only a small amount more and Boukai called for all in for the rest of his chips.
Boukai: K
J

Fricke: K
Q
T
8
Jimmy was ahead with his two pair and Rami acknowledged aloud he would need a jack or ten to stay alive.
The river was a jack — the J
— and Fricke was crippled to 47.4K to end the night. Boukai will return with 137.7K.
Chris “SLOPPYKLOD” Klodnicki took a couple of PLO pots off Eric “jakz101″ Crain during the last level without a showdown to increase his stack to 153.4K at the end of play. Crain is still healthy with 210.6K.
In all, 14 players will return at 2 p.m. tomorrow to play down to a winner event No. 42 of this World Series. Jon “PearlJammer” Turner will enter the day as chip leader with 469.2K. We saw Turner putting that big stack to use during the final round of no-limit hold’em. He raised and took a couple pots and when he was re-raised at one point he moved all in and his opponent folded.
WSOP 2009 EVENT #44 $2.5K RAZZ
Day one has come to a close in Event #44 here at the Rio. 315 players registered for this $2.5K Razz tournament, and after a day’s play 128 remain.
Sadly, Zak “traction” Gilbert (pictured at left) will not be joining us for day two. He got the rest of his small stack all-in after the bring in, and ended up making a ninety-seven low. Unfortunately for Gilbert, his opponent made an eighty-seven low and sent him to the rail.
Daniel “amichaiKK” Makowski picked up a nice pot off of John “The Razor” Pham near the end of the night. Pham paired his ace on seventh street and Makowski’s eighty-six low was good. Had Pham picked up an eight or better, he would have won the pot. Instead Daniel scooped it and ended the night with almost 30K.
Here are other end of the night chip counts:
Justin Bonomo - 30.6K
Daniel “amichaiKK” Makowski - 29.4K
Zac “Zacpacker” Fellows - 16.3K
Eric “whitE_mAmbA” Ladny - 9.1K
Mike “SamENole” Smith - 7.7K
Mike Sexton - 5.8K
WSOP 2009 EVENT #40 $10K PLO
Matt “mattg1983″ Graham is heads-up for his second bracelet against Vitaly Lunkin, who is looking for his second bracelet of the series. Graham has 3.2 million chips to Lunkin’s 5.6 million.
