“This Is Going To Have To Be It” by Court on 10.02.09, 12:26 am

Check.  Bet 300k.  Raise to 900k.  All in.  That was the action on the J85 flop.  Daniel Negreanu had check raised to 900k and when Barry Shulman moved all in Daniel leaned back in his chair and talked out loud to himself.  “I think this is going to have to be it,” he said right before straightening his back and announcing definitively “I call.”

Shulman quickly tossed his AA onto the table and Daniel turned up the QJ.  The turn was the J and the room exploded.  There was a long drawn out pause between the turn and the river, with Shulman down to a 2 outer everyone was already awarding Daniel the bracelet.

“That is the sickest hand I have ever seen,” was the next thing heard in the media area, as the A hit on the river to save Barry Shulman.

After being down for many hours Negreanu had clawed his way back to even and had taken a slight chip lead before the massive hand went down.  After the chips were counted out Daniel looked to have only a little over a million chips remaining.

Soon they were in the middle, with his pocket fours up against the pocket tens of Shulman.  This time there was no suspense with a ten in the window Daniel was left drawing to either running diamonds or running fours.  A black three on the turn and Negreanu approached Shulman to shake his hand and congratulate him on his victory.

For what has to be a disappointing 2nd place Negreanu earns £495,589 in his second consecutive World Series of Poker Europe main event final table appearance.  He improved on his 5th place finish of last year and has reportedly surpassed both Jamie Gold and Phil Ivey on the all time tournament money winners list.  In the interview thrust upon him within an instant of his defeat Negreanu was visibly and audibly shaken by the defeat, but talked about his resilience and never give up attitude no matter how many chips he had.

For Shulman the victory brings £801,603, the equivalent of around $1,280,000.
