Tamayo, Mattes Exit as We Reach Final 18 by Brett on 07.15.09, 6:35 pm

The remaining 18 players are redrawing for new seats as the final two tables of the Main Event have been reached. Six players were eliminated since our last report, including P5er Jonathan “driverseati” Tamayo.

Tamayo moved all in over the top of an Eric Buchman raise for 3.2 million with A-Q and Buchman made the call with pocket kings. Tamayo flopped a pair on the Q-10-10 flop but was unable to improve and a massive pot was sent over to Buckman. Tamayo earned $352,832 for his 21st-place finish.

We just learned in the past hour that Marco “Expekter” Mattes is a P5er from Germany. And while his coverage will be short and dispiriting here on P5sLive, we’d like to congratulate him on his 23rd place finish in the 2009 Main Event.

After losing the previously reported race to Nick “fu_15″ Maimone, Mattes moves all in for his last 1.4 million chips and Joe “jcada99″ Cada pushed his remaining chips in over the top. The other players folded and Mattes found out that he was in rough shape:

Mattes: 55
Cada: 88

Cada flopped a set on the flop, and while Mattes picked up a straight draw on the turn, the river was no help and he was eliminated.

Meanwhile Nick “fu_15″ Maimone continues to pulverize opponents at the ESPN featured table. His most recent victim was George Caragiorgas, who was eliminated in 20th place. Caragiorgas opened for 420K from under the gun, Maimone called from early position, and Jordan “scarface_79″ Smith called from the button.

On the K32 flop, Caragiorgas announced that he was all in for around 2.3 million. Maimone called and Smith folded. Nick turned over KK for a set of kings and his opponent tabled QJ for a flush draw. The sweat didn’t last long as Maimone turned the K to make quad Kings and put an end to the hand, increasing his stack to almost 12 million.

Ben “benba” Lamb made a surge up the leaderboard thanks to a double up courtesy of Steven Begleiter. Begleiter opened for a raise to 425K from under the gun and Lamb, who is seated on Begleiter’s immediate left reraised an additional 1.115 million. Action folded back around to Begleiter who moved all-in and Lamb quickly called for his remaining 5.4 million or so with AK. He was racing with Begleiter’s 99 until the flop fell A32 pairing Lamb’s ace and causing Ben to let out a yell of excitement and run to his rail. The turn brought Lamb a second pair with the K and the 8 on the river assured Lamb the pot. He doubled up to 13 million and Begleiter dropped to 7 million.
