WSOP 2008
Say that five times fast. We dare you.
Devin “TranquilChaos” Porter (pictured at left) made a lot of headway adding to his chip stack in the final level. With the blinds 600/1200 ante 200 Devin raised in middle position and the player in the big blind called. The flop came A
J
J
and both players checked. When the 4
fell on the turn the player in the big blind bet out 7.5K and Devin made the call. The board double paired when the 4
came on the river and the big blind checked. Porter bet out 15K and the other player thought for a minute before making the call. Devin turned over A
A
for the flopped boat and the other player tossed his cards in the muck.
A little while later, Porter picked up another substantial pot on the last hand of the night to increase his stack to 182K. Porter, Nenad Medic and another player saw a flop of 7
4
2
and Porter bet 6.5K. Medic folded and the other player called. The J
fell on the turn and both players checked. The 8
came on the turn and the other player checked to porter, who bet 14K. The other player called with a pocket pair of threes and Porter showed A
4
. We here at PocketFives Live are guessing Devin is feelin oooohhhhkaaaay going into Day 3.
When PocketFives caught up to Darren “DABADESTCHIC” Nelson’s (pictured right) table, he bet out in position several consecutive hands to take down small preflop pots. When we talked with Darren, it seemed this strategy had been working quite well for him as he was staying strong at 190K. However, the rest of his table seemed to be tilting before the end of the night as tempers flared and patience waned. In one particularly inflammatory hand, Darren called a small preflop bet from a player in early position and smartly laid it down to a reraise behind. Long story short, the floor was called because of dealer errors, the clock was called erroneously, and Darren laughed as he watched his table unravel. We’re pretty sure he will look forward to his new table draw for tomorrow!
At a few tables over, Mike “RunScreamin” Herder managed to take down a couple of uncontested preflop pots as the rest of his table was dormant, waiting for the clock to run out on Day 2B. Mike was excited to continue on to Day 3 and will return with a very substantial 208K in chips.
Russell “rdrcrsn” Carson fought the short stack struggle for about an hour after losing the bulk of his chips on a double-draw gone bad a few hours before the end of the day. Carson eventually busted out when he re-reraised a 4k open from the button out of the blind for his last 18k. Carson’s opponent called with JJ, ahead of Carson’s AK. Carson was looking good after the turn when the board read T-Q-3-K but a nine on the river made his opponent a straight and sent Carson to the rail. Joining him on the rail as play ended for the day were Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin and David “hosnimbarak” Tazbaz who got it all-in with pocket kings on a flop of Q-8-3 with his opponent holding pocket queens.
Here are some unofficial chip counts we caught as play was wrapping up for the evening:

Carter “ckingusc” King (pictured left) has been hanging on by a thread all day; in fact, the patience he’s continually exhibited has been admirable. However, this patience was wearing thin as his stack was shrinking - when PocketFives caught up to Carter halfway through the last level of the evening, he had less than 15K in front of him. Finally, he saw his chance to make a move and from the button, he shoved all in when it folded to him. After thinking awhile, a player in early position called his all-in and the dealer waved his paddle in the air. When both players flipped their cards, it was a classic coin flip situation: Carter held Q
J
versus his opponent’s T
T
. The board ran out K
3
8
6
and Carter was feeling pretty good, but while the J
on the river gave Carter a better pair, it gave his opponent the flush and he was sent to the rail.
Todd “koolkeith13″ Lewis also recently busted when he lost an 80K pot when he got it in with A-K while his opponent held A-9. A nine on the turn spelled disaster for Lewis and he was eliminated with an hour left in play.
Adam “Roothlus” Levy had some good news to share with his friend Ray Henson, who was sitting a few tables over. Levy had much to be happy about after he won a three-way all-in preflop hand where his kings held up against pocket queens and pocket jacks. Levy started the hand with about 75k and after his flopped set of kings held, his stack catapulted to over 200k. Henson has been enjoying some good fortune as well as his 20k stack at the start of the day has ballooned over 230k.
Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy increased his stack to 250K following a blind vs. blind confrontation. The player in the small blind raised to 3,600 and Josephy (pictured right) raised enough to put the player all in (nearly 30K). The player called instantly with pocket kings and Cliff flipped over pocket nines. As the dealer prepared to reveal the flop, Josephy yelled “king!” and naturally the dealer dealt the 9
on the flop, putting him in the lead. His hand held and he climbed back toward the top of the leaderboard.
Russell “rdcrsn” Carson’s stack took a big hit in a blind vs blind battle. In a limped pot, Carson and his opponent played for stacks on an A-4-5 flop. Carson’s opponent flopped aces and fours and managed to dodge Carson’s gut-shot straight draw and flush draw, scooping a 90k pot, leaving Carson with 18k.
Both Michael “Benvo123″ Benvonuti and Daniel “voff” Deveau took also big hits this past hour. Benvenuti got all-in on the flop with a set versus a flopped flush which knocked him down under 30K. Deveau got it all-in preflop with aces versus his opponent’s pocket jacks and looked to be in good shape to pick up a big pot, but a jack on the river shipped it the other direction and he was left with 50K.
With an hour left in the final level of the night, here are some unofficial chip counts of P5ers still alive:

After battling through sickness to get through Day 1 of the Main Event, Garrett “GBecks” Beckman (pictured left) is feeling way better on Day 2b
Beckman’s change of mood isn’t necessarily because the remnants of what he suspected was food poisoning is gone, although that definitely helps, but that his stack has gone from 54k to start the day to over 220k by the dinner break.
Beckman won a 160k pot earlier in the day when he opened for 2k and got re-raised to 7k. Beckman re-raised to 27k and his opponent called. First to act, Beckman checked a 10-10-7 flop and his opponent checked. Beckman checked when another 7 peeled on the turn and his opponent went all-in for 60k. Beckman called with queens and his opponents’ AK didn’t improve.
“It was pretty hard to check twice,” Beckman said.
Mohsin “chicagocards1″ Charania was pleased to make the dinner break after going through what he described as maybe the worst level of his life. Charania started with 108k and went down to 12k only to rebound to 63k by the break. Playing alongside Charania was Aditya “intervention” Agarwal, who hit the break with 150k. Despite having a healthy stack, Agarwal is still remembering the 85k pot he lost when his pocket sevens connected to the 8-7-2 board and his opponents pocket nines turned a set to trump Agarwal’s set of sevens in a hand where his opponent was all-in on the flop.
Aaron “NDGrinder59″ Steury has been steadily building his stack all day long, but he made a huge jump up the chip counts before the break when he got it all-in in a blind versus blind confrontation holding pocket queens to his opponent’s A-K. Steury managed to win the classic race situation when the board came ten high and Aaron increased his chip stack to 250K.
Tony “Bond18″ Dunst remained on life-support before the dinner break, which he planned to spend at the Rio’s Indian restaurant. PocketFives caught up with Tony in the big blind, checking on a flop of A
K
9
. When the small blind raised to 5.5K, Tony folded and called the table a “total fiasco” - he was barely treading water as Jean-Robert Bellande a few seats to his left kept chipping up. He couldn’t manage to catch any action on his small blind either; he completed and folded to a late raise. However, on the button, he shoved all in for his remaining 8.5K and the table folded to him. Bellande joked, “You’re the survivor here, kid. You’re the survivor.” He chipped up to a whopping 10.5K before dinner break.
Senovio “Dorsal Fin” Ramirez doubled up to 58K when he and another player got all of their chips in on a king-high flop — Ramirez with pocket aces and his opponent with ace-king. Here’s a look at some other chip counts as players went into the dinner break:
Tom “titantom32″ Braband - 224K
Brandon Schaefer - 140K
Jon “pokertrip” Friedberg - 110k
David “davidp18″ Peters - 109k
“BodogAri” Engel - 70K
Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin - 50k
Tracey “xtrACEy” Nguyen - 46K
Ryan “Daut44″ Daut - 41k
Adam “Roothlus” Levy - 30k

Chris “cbdr3799″ Dombrowski continued to be very active in the first half of Level 8 and PocketFives caught up to the action at his table as he was raising under the gun to 2.3K. Three players called in position - both the blinds and the button. The flop came T
9
J
and he bet 5K into the pot, getting one other call. When the turn brought the J
, Chris fired out 8.5K more and his opponent called again from the small blind position. At the 6
on the river, Chris moved all in for 9.5K more and got a call; he showed down K
Q
and the other player mucked. Chris doubled and now sits at 55K.
A few tables over, Frank “Round42″ Rusnak (pictured at right) reported that he’s the object of batting practice — one of his tablemates just happens to be Jose Canseco’s ex-wife and baby’s momma, Jessica. The pair were confronting each other as PocketFives watched Jessica reraise his preflop 1.9K bet to 6.8K. She stared him down and he gave her a hard time, but flashed a big smile to PocketFives.
Frank recently took down a decent sized pot when a player under the gun raised to 2.1K, Rusnak called in middle position, as did the player on the button. The flop Q
7
5
and all three players checked. The 7
on the turn prompted the initial raiser to check again and Rusnak bet out 4.7K. The player on the button then reraised to 9.7K and Frank thought momentarily before making the call. Both checked after the K
came on the river and Rusnak announced, “I have a pair.” The other player stared at him, waiting for him to turn over his cards. Frank revealed 9
9
, his opponent mucked, and he is now up to 80K.
Mohsin “chicagocards1″ Charania had courteously doubled up several players at his table throughout the day today and recently he finally had the same courtesy extended back to him when he and another player got it all-in on a flop of 9
5
2
with Mohsin holding pocket sixes with the six of hearts while his opponent had A-K with the king of hearts. No heart came on the turn or river and Charania doubled up to 49K.
Despite starting the day with a less-than-average stack of 23K, Leo “Superfluous Man” Wolpert has been on a hot run of cards, elevating his stack all the way up to 123K. Although it would be easy for him to tell PocketFives he’s just been playing above the rim and chipping up, Wolpert said that he’s just been sucking out, including snapping of pocket aces with his pocket tens.
Gary “GB2005″ Bogdanski (pictured at left) has just been eliminated from the Main Event — and in an ugly fashion at that. We caught up with Bogdanski betting 12K on a board of A
4
3
J
5
and his opponent moved all in, having Gary covered. Gary leaned back in his chair and said “I can’t fold, I call,” to which the other player replied “You lose.” He flipped over 4
2
for a straight flush and Gary angrily showed his T
8
before heading out of the Amazon Room.
Dan “voff” Deveau avoided disaster just before his table broke in the Brasilia Room. With blinds at 400/800, Deveau raised to 2.3K from under the gun and a player in late position raised to 6K. Deveau asked for a count of his opponent’s stack before making the call with Q
Q
. The board came out T
3
6
and Deveau checked to his opponent, who bet 10K. Deveau quickly folded and the other player showed his A
A
. Dan is still stitting comfortably with 70K.
