Eight Isn’t Enough

The $5K Short Handed No Limit Hold Em event may be down to only 8 players, but they are still two players shy of the final table. As we last reported, play had slowed significantly with 14 players remaining, but during the last level or two action picked up and we saw the field nearly cut in half.
First to hit the rail was Jason Gray (pictured at left), who was eliminated in 14th place when his 5

failed to hold against another player’s A
Q. Gray managed to fade both the flop and turn when the board came KT47, but the J on the river brought the other player a straight and Jason was sent home with $31,781.
Shortly after Gray left the Brasilia Room, Alex Jacob was eliminated in 11th place when he got it all-in with pocket nines against his opponent’s pocket tens on a board of 7
76. Steven “CornellFiji” Ware was battling a short stack much of the last level and eventually moved all-in from the small blind with J5 and the player in the big blind called with A5. The board ran out A877Q and Ware was eliminated in 9th place, earning $63,941.
Play will continue on into the early morning until they lose two more players. Recent bracelet winner Davidi “legrouzin” Kitai remains in the field. He currently sits with 390K–good enough for 7th in chips out of the eight remaining players.
Stud Players in the Money

The bubble burst in event #47, the $1.5k Stud h/l and the remaining players are all guaranteed at least $2,450. Brett “Gank” Jungblut and Craig “MrCasino” Gray have both survived the day so far. Brett currently has around 18k while Craig has been hovering around the 12k mark for a majority of the day. Phil Hellmuth has made his 66th WSOP cash in this event and Men “The Master” Nguyen has now cashed in 61 WSOP events.
Many notable players are still alive in the $5k NLHE six-handed event with the field down to 47. Steven “Cornell Fiji” Ware went on a killer run after the bubble burst. He started play after the bubble with 35k in chips and an hour later held over 350k. PocketFives asked Ware if he had proposed marriage to Frank (the dealer who dealt him all those monster hands) and Ware laughed and said he probably should have.
Players who have been knocked out recently include Glen “choron” Chorny (69th, $8,323), Mike “inissint” Glasser (66th, $9,080), Jason “tresfull21″ Mercier (51st, $10,972), and Jonathan “FatalError” Aguiar (49th, $10,972). Below are the unoffical chip counts of the remaining players.

A Player Makes a “FatalError”

The bubble finally burst in event #46, the $5k NLHE six-handed event after over an hour of hand for hand play. Jonathan “FatalError” Aguiar (pictured right) called another players all in preflop with Jon holding the AJ against the all in players AK. While other player was ahead preflop, the board ran out JT9J9 giving Jon a full house and the bubble boy was sent to the rail.
All the players remaining are guaranteed at least $8,323 but they all seem to have their sights set on the $911,855 that the winner will receive.
During hand for hand play, Steven “Cornell Fiji” Ware’s stack took a big hit when he called another player’s all in with top pair and the nut flush draw versus the all in player’s set of nines. When the set held, Ware’s stack was knocked down to around 35k and had to wait out the rest of the bubble without much action. Since the bubble burst though, Ware has been on a tear, catching pocket aces, pocket queens, and pocket kings… twice. The second time Ware held kings it seemed his luck had run out as his opponent held pocket aces, but the turn brought a third king and Ware’s stack shot up to 276k. Ware is now right near the top of the chip counts along with Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (270k).
Also notable as a result of the bubble bursting is that player Nikolay Evdakov has now cashed eight times in this years WSOP which ties the all time record held by Michael Binger (2007), Chad Brown (2007), Phil Hellmuth (2006), Richard Tatalovich (2006), and Humberto Brenes (2006).
Event #47, the $1.5k Stud h/l event is progressing and Craig “MrCasino” Gray and Brett “Gank” Jungblut are still fighting to build their chip stacks.
Brett (pictured left) started the day short stacked and got into a big hand earlier. With 3 players in, there was heavy action, betting and raising, until 5th street when one player folded and Brett ended up all in against the other player. Brett showed down (84)48T against the other players (A3)363, Brett’s two pair behind the other players trip threes. Both players were dealt a jack on 6th street, changing nothing, and on 7th the other player peeled the 7 while Brett slowly peeled the 8 to make his full house complete and to more than double his stack.
Barry Greenstein is currently 2nd in chips in the $50k HORSE event, with Phil Ivey right behind him in 3rd. James “mig.com” Mackey and Justin Bonomo have been having a good day and has built their stacks up to more than 300k while Tom “durrrr” Dwan (120k) and Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond (54k) have lost some ground and will need to get their stacks moving in the right direction if they want to make day 4 tomorrow.
Short-Handed Event Calls It a Night

During the last level of play in the $5K No Limit Hold Em 6-max event, several players found themselves either doubling up or going home. Glen “choron” Chorny (pictured at left) found himself in the former category when he got it all-in against a slightly smaller stack with QQ versus the other player’s AK. The board came out 75439 and Chorny added an additional 30K to his chip count, putting him over the 70K mark.
Some of the players who fell into the “go home” category include Vivek “psyduck” Rajkumar, who got his remaining 24K all-in in a coin flip situation and failed to win his race. Jason “JCarver” Somerville, who we last repoted was battling a short stack, had worked his way back up to 32K. However, his pocket kings failed to hold against his opponent’s pocket nines and he headed home about an hour before play ended.
Matt “mattg1983″ Graham had about 50K in his stack when, with the blinds at 600/1,200 ante 100, it folded around to the player in the small blind, who raised to 3.2K. Matt made the call from the big blind and the two saw a flop of 932. The small blind bet out 4.5K and Graham made the call. The turn came the 9 and Graham’s opponent bet 12K. Matt then moved all-in for his remaining 40K or so and the other player quickly made the call with 9T. After he saw his opponent’s holdings, Graham mucked his hand and headed for the rail.
Steve “Cornell Fiji” Ware made it to Day 2 of play, but he has significantly less chips than he did when we last checked in with him. Ware was relocated to a table that boasted an impressive line-up of Chad “lilholdem954″ Batista, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, and Shannon Shorr. Ware has doubled up several of his opponents including a big hand where Grospellier held pocket aces and got it all-in against Steve who had top pair on a queen-high flop. As play concluded, Ware had 40K left in his stack.

Ware on a Tear

The current chipleader in the $5K short-handed No Limit Hold Em Event is Steven “CornellFiji” Ware (pictured at left). In addition to being an online cash game player, Ware was also one of the people who uncovered the “nionio” scandal at Ultimate Bet. He is currently, in his words, “getting crushed by the deck” and has virtually doubled his already large stack in the span of one level.
One hand that helped propel him past the 200K mark occurred when, on a flop of 974, Ware’s opponent bet out 10K. Ware then asked how much the other player had, and when he learned it was around 50K more, he raised to 30K. The other player quickly moved all-in and Ware made the call with QT. He then learned he was in bad shape against his opponent’s A5, but the board came J8 to give Ware a straight. After the hand, he was up to 225K and is the chip leader by a substantial margin.
One player who has been headed in the opposite direction is Jason “JCarver” Somerville. When we last reported on Jason, he was sitting with a hefty 63K stack, but he has since dropped to under 10K. Jason explained he didn’t get involved in any huge altercations with other players, but kept taking, “lots and lots of little stabbings–like Caesar”. His downswing started when he took a 15K hit when he got it all in with pocket jacks against a short stack’s pocket queens. Since then, he has continued to lose chips and is now sitting with less than ten big blinds once players return from break.
Some players who have been eliminated in the past two levels include Leo “Superfluous Man” Wolpert, Alex “AJKHoosier1″ Kamberis, and Shawn “sbuck21″ Buchanan. One hundred-sixty eight of the initial 805 players remain and it was recently announced that 78 of them will be making the money.
