Switzer Cripples Ivey, Mercier Learning Fast by Rich on 06.07.09, 6:40 am

In the second to last hand of the night in Event #13 $2.5K NLHE, Brett “threatnasty” Switzer raised from middle position. The action folded to Phil Ivey in the small blind, and he pushed all in. The big blind folded, and Switzer called with AK. Ivey tabled AT, but his hand did not improve and he was crippled. Brett, however, doubled to 430K, and finished the night with 456K.

Scott “SCTrojans” Freeman (pictured left) will not be playing on Day 3. After running queens into kings, he shoved his short stack of 65K in the middle, under the gun, with the blinds at 6K/12K/1K. The action folded to Bahador Ahmadi, who held the kings against Freeman, and he told Scott, “I don’t want to look.” The two laughed, and Ahmadi sweated his cards. Bahador only needed to call 53K to win over 90K, and he did so with K5. Freeman was drawing very live, tabling Q9. Scott received no help from a KT644 board, and was eliminated in 25th place. He earned $14,413 for his efforts.

On Table 62, Keven “Stammdogg” Stammen raised the action to 27K from late position, and was called John Hoang in the big blind. The dealer flopped 742, and Hoang led out for 38K. Stammen thought, and then raised to 88K. John re-raised all in, and Keven made the call. “Flush draw?” Stammen asked. Hoang nodded and tabled 96. Keven turned over JJ, and echoed a very popular saying: “One time!” The 6 on the turn was a good sweat card. Hoang could now win with any six, nine or heart. Keven gave a sigh of relief when the 4 fell, and John Hoang was eliminated. Stammen won the 400K pot, and finished the night with 730K.

Garrett “GBecks” Beckman is still alive as well, and will enter tomorrow with 376K. All three P5ers will return to the Rio tomorrow for the 1 p.m. restart, and play will conclude when a champion is crowned.

WSOP 2009 Event #14 $2.5K LHE Six-Max

Shawn “sbuck21″ Buchanan (pictured right) and Brock “t_soprano” Parker are among the remaining 11 players in Event #14. Instead of taking their last break, the players, led by an outspoken Daniel Negreanu, opted to play through it and get another half level in. Play will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m., beginning with the last half hour of Level 19. They will then play down to a champion.

Buchanan won a big pot late in the evening with KK against the AA of Nikolay Losev. Losev led the whole way, until a K spiked on the river. Losev lost the minimum, check calling a river bet from Buchanan, and was disgusted to see the pocket kings. Shawn enters tomorrow with over 100K in chips.

Parker took a moment to talk to us, and according to him Frank Kline has been all-in this tournament, “Like a hundred times.” Brock explained a hand where he had QQ in the big blind, and Kline limped in. Parker raised and Kline called. The flop was 773, and Brock bet. Frank called, and the turn was the 8. Again, Parker bet and Kline called. The river was a J, and once more, Brock bet. Frank called a third time. “When he called, I thought he might have hit a back door club flush…but he said, ‘Straight.’ I was like…what????”

Kline tabled 9-10 and scooped the pot.

Parker lost that particular pot, but won many others. He sits with over 330K, and is fourth in chips. Kline on the other hand was eliminated before night’s end.

WSOP 2009 Event #16 $1.5K Stud Hi

Jason “treysfull21″ Mercier (pictured left) told us earlier this evening that this was his first live stud tournament. “I like it,” he explained. “I am learning a lot watching these guys.” Mercier learned so much since then, he is top 10 in chips at the end of Day 1 with 35K.

“This game doesn’t seem that hard,” Jason told us during the last level of play.

Mercier did take a small hit though when an opponent made two pair against him. After the betting was complete, his opponent tabled his cards showing queens and deuces. Studying the cards, Jason looked a bit unnerved. He mucked his cards and quickly regained his composure.

The remaining 97 players will return tomorrow for the 2 p.m. restart.
