Stu is the Man by Jessica on 01.15.09, 7:47 pm

The Southern Poker Championship Main Event appears to have a new chip leader and that man is Stewart “Stuman123″ Yancik (pictured left).  When we last checked in with him he had around 75K, but several key pots in Level 8 have sent his chip stack soaring up to 260K.  While we weren’t there to catch the action, Stewart filled us in on one of the pots that jump started his ascension up the chip counts:

With the blinds at 600/1200 ante 200 a player minraised in middle position and Yancik called in the big blind with 2-3 off suit.  The flop came Q-5-4 rainbow and Yancik checked to the raiser, who bet 8K.  Yancik called and hit gin when the turn was a six.  He checked again, his opponent bet 15K, and Stewart moved all-in for the other player’s remaining 30K.  The player quickly called and showed K-K for an overpair that was drawing dead to Yancik’s straight.

Since then, Yancik has been throwing his weight around the table, applying pressure to the shorter stacks.  When we caught up with him with him he had raised to 3.1K under the gun and a player in middle position reraised to 9.6K total.  Yancik casually tossed out 4 gray 10K chips (enough to put the other player all in) and his opponent quickly folded.

Jamie “TheCronic420″ Rosen has also been staying aggressive this level, despite even more tough players being moved to his table.  Shortly after Rosen busted Shawn “sbuck21″ Buchanan, the empty seat was filled by Hevad “Rain Khan”.  Other players have been shuffled around and the line-up at the table is as such:

Seat 3 - Chris Bell
Seat 4 - David Singer
Seat 5 - Danny Wong
Seat 6 - Jamie Rosen
Seat 7 - Ryan Young
Seat 8 - Hevad Khan

Impressive, no?

Rosen seems undeterred by his talented tablemates.  As Level 8 was winding down, Rosen raised to 3.2K from the cutoff, Hevad Khan called from the small blind, and the big blind called as well.  The flop came A87 and the two players checked to Jamie, who bet 4.5K.  Khan called and the big blind folded.  Both players checked the 7 on the turn and Khan checked again when the 9 fell on the river.  Rosen bet out 5K and Khan folded.

The very next hand, David Singer opens for a raise to 3.4K and Rosen quickly reraised to 9.5K total.  Singer thought for a minute before calling.  The flop came AQ7 and Singer checked to Rosen, who bet 15K.  After some deliberation, Singer folded his hand and Jamie flashed the A.  He ended Level 8 with around 150K in chips.

Ryan “youngluc” Young has not been faring so well at the table though.  After working his stack up to nearly 100K, Young last half his chips in a big hand where a player raised to 4K from middle position and Young called from the big blind.  Ryan then checked the flop of Q72.  The other player bet 4K again and Ryan called.  The turn was the 2 and Young check called his opponent’s 12K bet.  A 7 fell on the river and Young checked a third time.  His opponent fired 35K and Young eventually made the call.   Ryan was visibly surprised when his opponent turned over QQ for a full house.  Young mucked his hand and is now down to 35K.

Here are some updated chip counts:
