While it seems some players are content to play few hands as the PLHE Event #1 Field becomes smaller and smaller, Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers (pictured) is staying active and doing well.
With the blinds at 2k/4k Mike and another player tangled in a pot that totaled over 120k. After calling the other players bet on a flop of A
K
4
both players checked when the 4
came on the turn. The 2
fell on the river and Mike bet out 32k into the 60k pot and after going into the tank for a long time the other player eventually called. Mike showed the A
T
for aces and fours and the other player mucked allowing Mike to take the pot.
A little while later, Mike raised under the gun to 11k and 3 people, including one of the blinds, called. The flop came 9
8
5
. The player in the blind checked, Mike checked, and the next player bet out 22.5k. A player in late position called, the player in the blind folded and Mike raised to 65k. The initial bettor folded and the other player deliberated before called. The Q
came on the turn and Mike bet 35k. The other player reluctantly folded and Mike scooped up the 250k pot.
The very next hand Mike was in the big blind and Kathy Liebert raised to 12k in late position. Mike called and the flop came T
5
4
. Mike checked and Kathy bet 15k. Mike called. The turn brought the 5
and both players checked. The river was the 9
. Both players checked again and Mike showed 9
6
for a busted flush draw, but a rivered pair of 9s. Kathy mucked and Mike’s 9s took the pot.
With 43 players remaining, tensions are rising as the money bubble approaches. 36 players will get paid.
