Sowers Doubles Through Ferguson by Court on 02.26.09, 10:43 pm

Final table play has been fairly slow so far, at least in regards to huge all ins and bust outs.  All 6 players are still alive in the tourney, but in the first chunk of play some chips have been moving around the table.  Chris Ferguson was able to go from short stack to around 2.5 million in chips while Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers sat solidly in second place in the chips just under 3 million for a while before dropping down to around 1.5 million.

Sowers (left) lost a chunk of chips to Andrew Cimpan in a pot where Mike had opened preflop for 200k and Cimpan called the 2.5x opening raise.  On the K32 flop Cimpan checked over to Sowers who bet 325k.  Andrew called and on the K turn both players checked to see the Q river.  Cimpan checked over to Sowers for a third time and Mike put out a bet of 520k.  Cimpan made the call and his 77 was good enough to win the pot.

After that hand Sowers chip stack was greatly diminished but he was able to get a big double up at the expense of Ferguson, putting Chris back down to the short stack status he started with while vaulting Sowers back up towards the top of the chip counts, about where he started the day as well.  Sowers had again opened for 200k and Ferguson called from the small blind.  On the J82 flop Ferguson check raised all in over the top of a 250k bet from Sowers.  Mike made the call for the rest of his chips with his pocket kings and needed to dodge Ferguson’s 5 outer to double up.  Chris had theQJ and had flopped top pair but was well behind the overpair of Sowers and did not catch up as turn K ended any chance Ferguson had in the hand.  After the double up Sowers is flirting with a 3 million chip stack while Ferguson watched his count fall to just under 1 million chips.

Not long after the Sowers double up the blinds increased from 40k / 80k with a 10k ante to 50k / 100k with the same ante.  As the stakes go up, the all ins will become more and more frequent, and it is just a matter of time until the eliminations start flowing.
