Sets and Flushes by Court on 04.19.09, 7:29 pm

With the deep stacks players are often tentative to get themselves overly involved in pots that could blossom out of control.  Even large hands are being played relatively slowly but some chips have been moving across the tables.  Sets and flushes are still big hands and players want to get some value out of their hands, even if they do exercise some pot control to avoid a massive all in situation when the average stack is 500 big blinds deep.

Phil “USCPhildo” Collins was able to pick up some chips off of Clonie Gowen on the last hand before the break.  Phil checked on the river of the A9577 board hoping to induce a bet from Gowen but she checked behind with her AK.  Collins showed his 99 and raked in the pot as the room emptied out as players went on break.  They will return to play the 3d level of the day with blinds at 100 / 200 and a 25 chip ante.

Scott “BigRiskky” Clements (right) also made a full house with his pocket deuces on a board of 7-3-2-3-J and was able to get paid off on the river to add a few chips to his stack.  Clements doesn’t play all the major live tournaments, picking and choosing which locations he will travel too, but when he does show up he is a force to be reckoned with and over the last few years on of the most successful live players, even on limited volume.

Steve “MrTimCaum” O’Dwyer (left) was involved in the last hand at his table before the break as well.  On the river of a 932K7 board the action checked to Steve and he bet 3,500.  The other player in the pot quickly called and O’Dwyer said “nice call.”  The other player turned over his KT and Steve mucked his hand.

Cody “Thugmoneymky” Slaubaugh picked up some chips on a T73AA board.  On the turn Cody’s 4,800 chip bet was check raised to 1,050 and Slaubaugh called.  On the river the action was again checked to Cody and he bet 6k.  This time the other player just called and Cody tabled his A9 which was good enough to take the pot.

Flopping two pair was enough to cost Justin Filtz a couple large denomination chips.  On the A738T board both players had put in 4k on the turn and on the river Matt “Plattsburgh” Vengrin considered raising the 10k bet from Filtz but decided to just call.  Justin showed his A3 for a flopped two pair but Vengrin had made a flush with the 74.
