We’ve reached that point in the week where we report on an interesting ruling that left everyone at the table baffled as to just what happened and the best way to handle the situation. We have to admit, we missed the action, but Bryan “badbeatninja” Devonshire, Jonathan “driverseati” Tamayo (pictured left), Jon “pokertrip” Friedberg, and David Sklansky all kindly filled us in on what happened.
During the most recent NLHE portion of the event, Tamayo, who is seated in Seat 6, was involved in a hand with the player in Seat 2. The board read K-5-5-8-K and Tamayo’s opponent threw out two yellow 1K chips and one blue 500 chip and said what the players in Seats 3 and 4 claimed was “700″. A quick review of the math will indicate the player had a bit of a live misclick and had actually put 2.5K in the pot. Tamayo tanked for what Devonshire claimed was 30 seconds before matching the 2.5K bet and annoucing “call.” Jonathan turned up A-10 for kings and fives with an ace while the other player turned over a counterfeited pair of threes.
As the pot was being pushed to Tamayo, the players on the other end of the table clarified that the bet was 700 and told the dealer he needed to make change out of the pot. The players on Tamayo’s end of the table protested and asked the dealer to clarify the bet. The dealer admitted he wasn’t sure what the other player had said, so the floor was called. After appealing to the highest authority possible, it was determined that the 700 bet stood because it was the “lesser of two evils.” Tamayo was required to refund the player his 1.8K and now sits with around 5K.
While Tamayo lost out on some value from the hand, Friedberg actually turned a profit on the hand. He bet Sklansky $20 that Daniel Negreanu, who is seated one table away, would not agree with Sklansky that the 2.5K bet should stand. When we arrived on the scene, Sklansky was still away from the table debating the decision with Daniel, so it appears as if Friedberg will have a little extra cash come dinner time.
A few tables away Maksim “getgot” Marandeyev (pictured right) picked up a nice pot during the Limit portion of Level Three. With the betting limits at 300/600 Maksim raised from the cutoff and the player on the button put in a third bet. Marandeyev called and the two saw a flop of K
kc}T
. Maksim check-called a bet from his opponent on the flop and both players checked when the J
hit on the turn. The river was the A
and Marandeyev led out with a bet. The other player thought a minute before folding and conceding the pot. After the hand Maksim was up to around 10K.

WSOP 2009 EVENT #45 $10K PLHE
Event #45 restarted in the Orange Section of the Amazon Room and JC “PrtyPSux” Alvarado (pictured left) wasted no time getting back into the action.
The blinds were 1.2K/2.4K when action folded to him in the small blind and he raised to 6K. Alex Jacob called in the big blind and the two took a flop of J
9
2
. Alvarado led out for 8K and Jacob called. JC slowed down when the A
turned and checked to Jacob. Alex checked behind and the dealer wrapped the table before dropping the 3
on the river. Alvarado calculated the pot and then put out a large, 22.3K bet. Alex sat up in his chair and reached for orange 5K chips. He started shuffling them together thinking the decision over. Finally Jacob reluctantly called, but mucked when Alvarado tabled A
3
for a rivered two pair. JC jumped to 132K after the hand and Alex slipped to 95K.
Luke “IWEARGOGGLES” Staudenmaier has hit the ground running today. In a recent pot Staudenmaier raised to 6K from the cutoff and was re-raised by Full Tilt pro Erik Seidel. Seidel made it 19K total and Luke responded by grabbing a stack of 5K chips and four-betting to 65K. Seidel mucked and Luke scooped the pot.
WSOP 2009 EVENT #46 $2.5K LIMIT OMAHA 8
P5ers are dropping like flies in Event #46.
Since the restart at 2 p.m., Annie Duke, Dutch “havoj” Boyd, Brett “Gank” Jungblut, Darus “bejomas” Suharto, Justin “BoostedJ” Smith and Barry Greenstein have all hit the rail.
Shannon Shorr is still alive but he is short. With under 30K Shorr will certainly need to scoop a few pots with the blinds now at 500/1000.
