Players have bagged their chips up for the night and Day 1D of the 2009 World Series of Poker is now complete. A record field of 2,809 filled the Rio and around 500 players were turned away as registration closed this morning. Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet told us that he received one af the last seats when he arrived to register at 5:00 Monday morning.
Approximately 1,900 players survived the five levels to return on Day 2B, which will get underway at Noon on Wednesday. Scott “SCTrojans” Freeman wasn’t among those that will be returning. Freeman moved over to the Blue Section of the Amazon Room during the last level and found a unfortunate new tablemate in Prahlad Friedman. The two went to battle soon after. With the blinds at 200/400 ante 50 Friedman raised to 1.3K from middle position and Freeman moved all in for a total of 11.4K. Action folded back to Friedman, who made the call. Freeman flipped over J
8
and needed help against Friedman’s A
Q
. The board rolled out Q
J
5
A
7
, giving Prahlad two pair and ending Freeman’s Main Event.
Andrew “tiltyjoker” Lee made it through the day but was left with just over two big blinds to return to on Wednesday. On the last hand of the night Lee moved all in for a little less than 10K with 9
9
and an early limper called. Lee watched his opponent table Q
J
. The K
9
8
flop gave Lee a set but the T
left him needing to pair the board. The chips were counted down and Lee had the other outchipped by 1,025. That’s what he”ll show up with on Wednesday.
Josh “brikdog24” Brikis padded his stack during the last level of play. He and two other players were in for 4K before the flop of A
J
T
. Brikis led out for 5K and the player in seat five called. The other player folded and the turn was the 5
. Brikis bet 10K and seat five moved all in for 19,375 more. Brikis looked a little confused (and pained) by the move, but he called after a few moments of thought and tabled T
T
. His opponent, meanwhile, turned over A
9
. Brikis summed up the situation pretty well a few moments later after the A
fell on the river and he was stacking the man’s chips.
“It was a little scary,” he said. “But then he was drawing dead.”
Brikis will return for day two with 133K.
We were floating around the Amazon Room toward the end of the day when Sean “swd805″ Dorn called us over to his table.
“I’m all in,” he told us. “This might be the end.”
The board was A
J
6
3
and he was all in for just about 5K with over 20K in the middle. His opponent called and the hands were tabled:
Dorn: A
K
Opponent: A
J
Sean was left for dead but the dealer spiked the 6
on the river resurrecting him.
“YES!!” Dorn yelled, jumping up and knocking his drink and chair over. Ice spilled all over the felt and Sean was quick to apologize to the dealer and the table. “I just didn’t want to get knocked out with twenty-six minutes left,” he said. “Thank God for that heart.”
That heart gave Dorn a new life and he will begin Day 2B in the Miranda Room with 35K.
Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy had a turbulent last level. Josephy’s peak was about 100K, but he lost a big pot with aces on a J
6
2
board. His opponent rolled over J
J
and held. Bax gained some back with a very nice call a few hands later. We got to the table on the turn and the board read Q
J
6
5
, Josephy checked and his opponent over shoved for 15K. Cliff laughed and ran his hands through his hair. Puzzled, he sat back in his chair and drank some water. Finally he flipped three orange 5K chips in the middle and his opponent revealed K
Q
. Josephy happily turned over A
Q
, the river blanked and Cliff was awarded the pot.
Josephy never pushed back towards six figures though, ending the night with 61K.
The last level of the evening was also tough for Dutch “havoj” Boyd. He and Phil Ivey tangled a handful of times but neither Boyd nor Ivey seemed to have an edge the other. They traded pots constantly, but Boyd still ended the night with an impressive 121K.
Tyson “POTTER” Marks will take an even bigger stack into play on Wednesday. His stack grew steadily throughout the day and he finished with 196.5K, a number he seemed to find almost hard to believe when he relayed it to us.
We missed Frank “Round42” Rusnak at the end of the night but we presume that he is through to day two with a healthy stack. We watched him win a pot near the end of play. The player in seat two bet 2.1K on the turn with the board reading 9
7

and Rusnak called. The river was the 6
. Seat two checked this time and Rusnak bet 3.5K. His opponent called and Rusnak turned over T
T
for a straight to take the pot.
