P5ers Closing In On Round Two Of Shootout by Rachel on 06.27.09, 3:46 am

Tables around the Brasillia Room are starting to empty as the winners are being determined in the first round of the $1.5K limit hold’em shootout event.

We haven’t seen any PocketFivers advance to the second round just yet (though we might have missed someone), but several players are closing in on tomorrow’s play and the money. All players who advance tonight will cash in the event.

Table 227 - Matt “mattster24″ Sterling (pictured at left) are Mike “SirWatts” Watson are still playing four handed along with Gavin Griffin and another player. Watson holds the chip lead. Watson won a pot off Sterling during the last level. Watts raised before the flop with the limits at 400/800 and Sterling called. The flop was QT5. Watson bet and Sterling made the call. The turn was the 3. Watson bet again and Sterling called. The river was the Q. Watson check and, after some thought, Sterling checked behind. Watson looked a little frustrated as his turned over his KQ to take the pot.

Watson also got some chips from Griffin. Griffin checked on a flop of {jc]T4 and Watson bet. Griffin called and the turn was the 3. The action was the same with Griffin check-calling a bet from Watson. The river was the 3. Griffin led out this time and Watson quickly put in a raise. Griffin counted his stack and considered his options before eventually folding.

Table 228 - Brock “t soprano” Parker is heads up with the chip lead.

Table 239 - Eric “jakz101″ Crain is now heads up with Tom Schneider. Crain has a commanding chip lead.

Table 233 - Ben Fineman is one of five players left at one of the most crowded tables remaining.

Table 241 - Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah has vaulted into the chip lead at his table with three players left.

Table 204 - Jim Geary has been heads up for quite a while. He hasn’t finished the match just yet, but he still has a big chip lead.

Table 199 - Craig “craigthedeac” Boyd (pictured at right) and Shawn “sbuck21″ Buchanan are both still alive with three players remaining.

Table 202 - Eric “EFro” Froelich just got heads up with Diego Cordovez but is well behind in chips.

Table 177- Matt “mattg1983″ Graham is staying alive at his four-handed table despite being very short on chips. With the blinds at 200/400 and the limits at 400/800, Graham had about 5K in front of him.

People you can add to the list of the eliminated: Jon “pokertrip” Friedberg, Shaun Deeb, Jeff “yellowsub” Williams, Grant “drossxyu” Hinkle and Darryll “DFish” Fish.

Fish got the rest of his chips in after being raised on the turn with the board reading 9965.

“You’ve got the nuts, right?” said Fish as he splashed in his last few chips.

“You have the nuts?” his opponent asked, not hearing Fish correctly. “I’ve got a nine.”

“Yeah, that’s the nuts,” Fish said and he mucked his hand without even waiting for the K to be dealt on the river.

WSOP 2009 #49 $50K HORSE

Zac “zacpacker” Fellows (pictured at left) has floated below the starting stack the entire day, but he recently won a nice pot off of Daniel Negreanu. The game was Stud 8, and on sixth street the hands looked like this:

Negreanu: XX-3-2-Q-J
Fellows: XX-A-8-J-2

Fellows led out and Negreanu called. The two were dealt a down card on seventh street and Zac bet again. Daniel called and Fellows rolled over 9-3-X for a flush.

“You win,” Daniel said. Neither player had a low and Fellows chipped up to 142K.

The sports talk continues on Cory Zeidman’s table. The conversation has switched from the NBA to MLB and steroids. Zeidman can afford to chat it up, he’s comfortable with the 150K starting stack.

Jon “PearlJammer” Turner is skipping out on the sports talk and instead mounting a comeback. During a round of Hold’em he won a nice pot with a set of tens over a smaller set. We didn’t see the smaller set but Mike Matusow was sure to let everyone know that it was a set over set scenario. Turner is now about the starting stack with 170K.

Pat ”TorontoToro needs to get something going, he is very short with 76.5K.
