Several P5ers Cash in $10K Heads Up by Brett on 06.14.09, 7:37 pm

The Round of 64 in the $10K NLHE Heads Uogot underway at 2:00 PM in the Miranda Room and many of the matches have already concluded. The winners have advanced to Round 4 with a minimum cash of $17,987. There will be one more round tonight as we’ll have our final 16 set for tomorrow.

Here’s some of the action we caught from Round 3:

Jamie “pokerjamers” Armstrong vs. Ben Spindler
We missed what happened but Spindler told us that Armstrong had around 13 big blinds left when the final hand went down. Spindler shoved from the button with A-3 and Armstrong called with A-10, but a 3 on the turn sent Jamie toward the doors as he was eliminated one round short of the money.

Jeff “ActionJeff” Garza vs. Steve Zolotow
Garza fell behind Zolotow early in their match, and was a chip disadvantage when we joined the action. Zolotow raised to 3.6K before the flop with the blinds at 800/1600 and Garza made the call. Both players checked the AK7 flop as well as the 9 on the turn. After the 8 fell on the river Garza led out for 7.6K and Zolotow didn’t waste much time making the call. Garza tabled 87 for a rivered two pair and Zolotow mucked.

Garza gave those chips back a while later, though. He raised to 4K with the blinds at 1K/2K and was called by Zolotow pre-flop. The flop was QT5. Zolotow checked and Garza bet 5K. Zoltow made the call and both players saw the 5 on the turn. Both player checked and the river was the 5. This time Zolotow led out for 11K and Garza laid his hand down.

At last check Zolotow maintained a dominating chip lead over Garza.

Yevgeniy “atimos” Timoshenko vs. Scott Fischman
Timoshenko  vaulted to an early lead in the match but Fischman has since made up some of the deficit. On one hand that crippled Fischman, Timoshenko bet 2.5K on a board of 9446 and Fischman called. The J came on the river and Timoshenko bet 4.8K. Fishman thought for a moment before raising to 11.1K. Timshenko, clearly baffled by the raise, decided to make the call and Fischman quickly conceded defeat. “Ace-high,” he said as began to slide his cards into the muck. Yevgeniy flipped over Q9 for nines and fours and Scott was left with 17K.

On the next hand Timoshenko moved all in from the button with the blinds at 800/1600. Fischman called with KT and was able to beat Timoshenko’s 45 to increase his stack to 35K. Soon after he won another race with AQ against Yevgeniy’s A4 to get back to 60K. Timoshenko still held a sizable lead as we made our way back to the media room.

Leo “Superfluous Man” Wolpert vs. David Pham
At the 800/1600 blind level Wolpert raised to 4.8K and Pham moved all in for his last 42K. Wolpert snap called with JJ, which was in good shape against Pham’s AT. The board ran out 99233 and a visibly excited Wolpert advanced to the round of 32. “I’m just happy to cash,” he told us afterward.

Kyle “dumpingKGB” Brossia vs. Johnny Chan
With the blinds at 600/1200, we caught Brossia re-raising Chan’s 3K open to a total of 8.5K. Chan made the call and the flop was 752. Brossia led out on the flop for 13.5K and Chan called. The turn was the 4. Brossia checked this time and Chan bet 20K. Brossia decided to fold and the pot went to Chan.

The players were already in the middle of another big hand during the same level when we stopped back by their table. On the turn, the board read T73K. Chan made a 16K bet and Brossia called. The river was the 8. Chan made another big bet of 36K and Brossia thought for several minutes before mucking his hand.

The losses left Brossia facing a big deficit but with plenty of chips and play remaining considering the blind level. At last check, he had pulled back to almost even with Chan.

Steve “MrTimCaum” O’Dwyer vs. Jeff Madsen
O’Dwyer is flipping well today (from what we’ve seen). After falling behind in the match early O’Dwyer got his remaining 58.6K in preflop with AT against Madsen’s pocket fours. The T533A board doubled O’Dwyer up and got things back to even. Steve chipped up to take the lead and then won another flip to win the match, his AQ against Madsen’s pocket eights.

Michael “wrldsgrtest” Banducci vs. Brian Lemke
Lemke got his short stack into the middle holding A7 against the TT of Banducci. The flop was Q65. “That’s one flop,” said Banducci to Lemke in a good-natured way. The river was the 5, giving Lemke no help, but the river was the A and he doubled up. However, he remained the short-stack in the match.

During the 800/1600 level saw Banducci making a 17K turn bet on a board of K722. Lemke made the call to see the Q on the river. Banducci bet again, this time but 45K into the pot. Lemke folded and was again left very short on chips.

Alec “traheho” Torelli vs. Joao Vide Barbosa
With the blinds at 800/1600, Torelli called a raise of 3K out of position before the flop. The flop was Q95. Torelli checked-called a 4K bet from Barbosa. The turn was the K and both players checked. The river was the 5. Torelli checked one more time and Barbosa bet 11K. Torelli tanked for quite a while but made the lay down in the end.

It was Barbosa who was in the tank when we rejoined the action. Torelli was all in on the river for 28.2K with the board reading T88AJ. There was already 37K in the pot. Eventually Barbosa decided to make the call with is Q-10 but Torelli showed K8 and raked in the pot, taking a small lead in the match.

Other matches:

-Jason “treysfull21” Mercier defeated Michael Pesek when his Q-J held up against Pesek’s Q-8. It was back to the his seat in the $2.5K Pot-Limit Omaha event for Mercier, who was being blinded off while he played his match. “Men ‘The Master’ is probably taking my chips,” Mercier said before heading over to record his win with the tournament officials.

-Justin “Boosted J” Smith, who is also double-dipping in the Omaha event, advanced as well, defeating William Thorson.

-Alex “Kadabra” Keating was about even with Clavet Mathieu when we left the Miranda Room.

-Shawn “sbuck21” Buchanan was behind in his match with Benjamin Lamb.

WSOP 2009 Event #28: $1.5K NLHE

The money bubble burst in the $1.5K as 270 players have made a guaranteed $2,808. Cody Slaubaugh, Kyle Bowker and David “The Maven” Chicotsky all hit the rail before cashing, but a few online stars, including Peter “breeth” Turmezey and David “Doc_Sands” Sands, have been big movers early in the day. Sands began play with 58K and explained to us how he had chipped up to over 100K in the first hour. He first eliminated a short-stacked Justin Phillips when he raised in late position and Phillips moved all in for his remaining chips from the small blind with A-9. Sands’ A-Q held up to pick up some momentum and he then won a race with pocket eights against K-Q to hit the 100K plateau.

Turmezey started Day 2 with 26K and now has around 65K to work with as Level 12 comes to a close. Other healthy P5ers are Anthony “D1rtyR1v3r” Nardi and Marco “CrazyMarco” Johnson.
