Nickel Double by Brett on 07.06.09, 5:45 pm

Richard “Lee Nickel” Fohrenbach was all smiles as players went on their first break of the day. On the last hand of the level with blinds at 50/100 Forhenback raised to 350 from under the gun, the button called and the player in the small blind raised to 1,400. Fohrenbach called and the other player folded. The flop brought 963. The small blind bet 1.5K, Fohrenbach raised to 5K and his opponent moved all in for 29K. Fohrenbach took all of two seconds before calling, telling us “I just wanted to make sure I had it.” He flipped over 99 and the other player sheepishly revealed KK. The turn and river brought the 3 and (Tc} and Fohrenback eliminated his opponent and increased his stack to 61K.

Seth “grtwhitehoop” Fischer also got off to a fast start today, but he couldn’t help feeling like he got shorted on a potential double up. We missed the hand, but he filled us in on how he got involved in a raised pot holding A-J. The flop came down A-J-4 and the players, Fischer included, checked to the intial raiser who bet 500 into the 800 chip pot. The player to Seth’s right check-raised to 1.5K, Fischer called, and the intial raiser called. The turn was a 6 and the check-raiser checked to Seth who bet out 4K. Both the initial raiser and the check-raiser called and they went to the river, which was another jack. The player on Fisher’s right checked, Fischer bet 11K and both players folded. As Seth was raking the pot the initial raiser told him he folded pocket fours for fours full.

Tony “Bond18” Dunst’s Main Event comeback has fallen short. After working his way back up to almost 10K, he was eliminated just before the first break of the day. The board read 973Q on the turn. The player in seat three moved all in and had more than enough to cover the last 7K or so in front of Dunst.

“This spot sucks,” Dunst said. “I just am so dumb if I get it wrong.”

After another minute or so of thought Dunst told his opponent “I really think you have a draw” and made the call.

His opponent turned over AQ and a dejected Dunst showed his T9. The K fell on the river and Dunst’s Main Event was over two hours in.

Jeff “ActionJeff” Garza raised to 325 before the flop and the player on the button re-raised to 1.4K. Garza made the call and the flop was JT2. Garza checked and the button bet 2.3K. Garza made the call and the turn was the 2. Garza checked again and the button moved all in for 10.3K or so. Garza folded, leaving himself with about 9K in his stack.

On the very next hand Garza called a raise of 425 preflop and he and three other players saw a flop of KK2. The action was checked around and the turn was the T. The small blind led out for 1.5K and Garza was the only caller. The river was the 5. The small blind checked and Garza moved all in for 7.4K. His opponent folded and Garza got a little healthier.

Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin lost a small pot early on but got one opponent as his table a little flustered. Badwin raised to 275 from early position, the cutoff raised to 1,025 and Baldwin called. The two saw a flop of AKJ and both checked. The turn brought the 4 and they both checked again. The Q on the river was the action card. Baldwin led out for 2,375 and his opponent looked displeased. “This is not a good day,” as he leaned back in his seat. He took two minutes before deciding to make the call. “You’re good,” Baldwin said as he tossed his hand in the muck. His opponent turned over QQ for a rivered set. Baldwin was left with 20K after the hand.
