After navigating through a sea of Dennis Phillips fans dressed up in white shirts and Cardinals caps, we came upon Clayton “clayton27″ Newman (pictured left) in the midst of what would be a very big hand. We missed the preflop action, but we watched as the player under the gun checked to Newman on a Q

flop and Newman bet 1K into the 950 chip pot. His opponent check-raised to 2.5K total and Clayton thoughtfully counted out a 3-bet of 7.4K total. The other player didn’t take too long before deciding to move all-in and Clayton practically beat him into the pot with his Q
Q
for top set. The other player showed his T
T
for middle set and a crowd gathered around the table to see if the one-outer would hit or not.
It didn’t. The turn was the J
and the river the J
to give Clayton queens full of jacks, which was enough to bust his opponent less than an hour into play. After the hand Clayton turned to his tablemate Maria “Maridu” Mayrinck and said, “I feel kind of bad for him.”
“I don’t,” Mayrinck responded. “It was pretty obvious what was happening.”
Newman wasn’t done just yet though. The very next hand it folded to Newman in the cutoff and he raised to 300 (blinds were 50/100). The player in the big blind called and they saw a flop of 8

6
. The big blind checked and Clayton bet 500. His opponent called and then checked again when the K
fell on the turn. Clayton bet out 1.4K and the other player check-raised to 4K total, which Newman called. The river was the 6
and the other player led out for 7K. Clayton called fairly quickly and his opponent tapped the table as if to concede the hand.
“Turn ‘em up,” Clayton said with a smile.
“Queen high,” the other player responded, leaving his cards face down. Newman then flipped up K
3
for the king-high flush and raked another nice pot to build his stack up to 66.5K.
While Newman is operating on full speed, action in the Brasilia Room has been relatively slow to this point. Andrew “tufat23″ Teng and Lee “acumen53″ Childs both picked up a few small pots to boost their stacks above 30K. Mark “markysals11″ Salinaro has slipped a bit coming out of the gate. Salinaro has given up a few pots, slipping to 26K.
At the WSOP, players who register late usually find themselves sitting together. This has created some tough tables, including one featuring Darryll “DFish” Fish, Justin “BoostedJ” Smith and Jamie “mmwawa” Kerstetter. We hope those three have fun with one another.
Some players we’ve spotted over in the Blue section of the Amazon Room include David “Bakes” Baker, Tracey “xtrACEy” Nguyen, Justin Bonomo, Blair Rodman, David “TheMaven” Chicotsky and Justin “looshle” Pechie. Tristan “Cre8ive” Wade is also there and informed us that he might have the easiest table draw in the room. Apparently players at his table have been willing to play big pots with marginal hands early on and one guy even floated a flop with 10-high. We look forward to reporting on the action at his table throughout the day.
Barry “BearW8″ Wiedermann’s good fortune started before play even began. He is one of the nine players at the ESPN Feature Table along with Daniel Negreanu.
