Before play started Jason “treysfull21″ Mercier mentioned that if he was to bust in the first hour he might end up playing in the high rollers event going on across town as the EPT London gets ready to kick off. He started the day 32nd out of 36 with only 125k but after a recent burst he is now the chip leader and did more than his fair share in getting the field down to only two tables and 18 players.
Late in the 5k / 10k blind level Mercier (left)was able to bust short stacked Konstantin Bucherl in a pot where Mercier opened for 24k, Steven Fung called and Bucherl moved all in for 231k. One of the shorter stacks, but still a hefty amount. Mercier made the call, Fung folded and when they were turned up the AJ of Mercier needed lots of help against the pocket kings of Bucherl. gave both players a flush, but with the A
Mercier had the winning hand and Bucherl was out in 21st.
Next up Mercier got the best of Steven Fung. After Fung had opened to 28k (blinds had jumped to 6k / 12k) Mercier made it 76k. Fung then moved all in and Mercier made the call with pocket tens. No help on the board for Fung and hello 1 million chip mark for Mercier. Fung finished in 20th place after a solid tournament run where he impressed a lot of people with his game. After busting Fung the stack in front of Mercier was well over 1 million, and after picking up another nice pot without showdown he was up to 1.3 million… and a long way from the 125k he had not too long ago.
Craig Burgess was then eliminated in 19th place at the hands of Barry Shulman, bringing the field down to only 18 players and making it time for another redraw. All three elimanations (19th-21st) fell in the 25,918 GBP payout level. Here is how the field stacked up with 18 players left. Chip counts, rank and the table / seat assignments for the final two tables are included:
