Klodnicki 3rd, Turner 5th in $2.5K Mixed Event by Brett on 06.24.09, 5:00 am

So close yet again. Chris “SLOPPYKLOD” Klodnicki’s shot at his first gold bracelet came up short as he finished third in the $2.5K Mixed Games event. Klodnicki (pictured left) fought back after taking a horrendous beat on Day 2 to reach the final table with an opportunity to capture the title. Alas, he was knocked out by eventual champion Jerrod Ankenman when the two got all of their chips in on a 943 flop. Klodnicki had the lead with two pair but Ankenman had an overpair, a straight draw and a flush draw, and made the flush on the turn. Klodnicki couldn’t fill up on the river and he made his exit from the tournament. Ankenman went on to win the tournament, his first bracelet and $241,637 .

Last year, Klodnicki took 2nd place to Barry Greenstein in the $1.5K Razz event last year and then followed that up with a 12th-place finish in the Main Event. He’ll have to wait for his first gold bracelet but leaving the Rio with $97,897 today should help ease the pain a little.

Jon “PearlJammer” Turner began the day with the chip lead but never picked up momentum during the final table. He found himself short after losing a big pot to Jeff Tims in 2-7 Triple Draw. Ankenman handed him the final knockout in the limit hold ‘em round. He took home $49,569 for his efforts.

WSOP 2009 Event #45: $10K Pot Limit Hold ‘em

We’ve reached the end of the day in the $10K PLHE Event. Eighty-five of the original 275 players survived through one of the absolute toughest fields we’ve seen at this year’s World Series of Poker.

Table 5 was having a good time in the Amazon Room during the last two levels of the night. JC “PartyPSux” Alvarado paid an opponent $50 to see his hand after he re-raised him all in. His opponent obliged and turned up a hand worse than Alvardo’s. JC let out a yell and the entire table erupted in laughter. Alvarado only had $100 bills and reluctantly had to exchange for a $50 bill.

“I won’t even play the next hand,” Alvarado said. “These are unlucky.”

JC disliked the $50 bill so much that Darryl “DFish” Fish convinced him to take two $20 bills for it. Must be nice to finish top five in chips with 209K and pick up $10 for nothing.

Alvarado held his own on the felt though. In one particular hand the board read 8637K and there was about 20K in the pot. JC’s opponent led out for 11.2K from the blinds and Alvarado tanked. He counted out his chips and cut out a call. Shuffling the chips, he scrunched his face thinking the situation over. JC pump faked twice, he really wanted to make the call. Finally he splashed the pot and his opponent turned over J9 for jack-high. Alvarado turned over Q9 for queen high and won the pot with an outstanding call.

Davidi “legrouzin” Kitai also went deep into the tank while facing a river bet on a table across the room. The board was J538T and Kitai (pictured left) had led out for 4.6K. His opponent raised to 20K and the wheels began to turn in Davidi’s head. He removed his hood and stared at his opponent who sat stone cold. “I will take two hours to make this decision if you let me,” Kitai told the table. His tablemates responded with one word: “Clock.”

A floorman made his way over and began the countdown. Davidi could not bring himself to a decision and when his time ran out his hand was declared dead. His stone faced opponent could breathe again and scooped the pot. Kitai got up and walked around a bit, visibly bothered by the hand.

Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers, Dean “StickyINC” Hamrick and Theo “pittrounder” Tran were missing in action and have been confirmed as busto, and Justin “fluffdog” Filtz was done-in by November Nine member Ivan Demidov.

Players will return at 2:00 p.m. Vegas time on Wednesday. The average stack going into Day 2 is 97K with the blinds set to start at 1.2K/2.4K. Here’s a look at the P5ers still alive:
