This play may only seem crazy to Phil Hellmuth.
Marco “CrazyMarco” Johnson (pictured at left) was one of several players to call a raise of 600 with the blinds at 100/200 in level four of Event No. 28, a $1.5K NLHE event. Phil Hellmuth, who had showed up late and sat down in the seat directly to Johnson’s left, then raised to 2.5K. The raise left Hellmuth with 550 chips behind. The action folded back around to Johnson, who raised enough to put Hellmuth all in. Hellmuth made the call and the cards were turned over:
Johnson: T
T
Hellmuth: A
K
Hellmuth seemed a little annoyed by Johnson’s play, saying that Marco had to be hoping only for A-K when he raised.
The flop was 6
6
3
, but it was the turn that caused Hellmuth to jump out of his seat. It was the T
, sealing the win for Johnson. After the 7
was dealt on the river, Johnson raked in the pot and chipped up to around 15K.
Rob “VeeRob” Pearlman, who is seated at the same table as Brett “Gank” Jungblut, told us about a big pot he won earlier.
Pearlman said he held pocket fours in a six-way limped pot before the flop. The flop came 7-4-2 with two heart and Pearlman ended up with two-players all in. One player had T
7
while the other player had A
K
. Pearlman dodged all of his opponents’ outs and won about 13K in the pot.
As he was recounting his hand, Jungblut played a big pot of his own. He led out for 2,250 on a flop of Q
9
2
. The man in seat one then tried to make a raise to 4K before being told by the dealer that he must make it at least 4.5K. The man obliged and he action was back on Jungblut. After some thought, Jungblut moved all in and was insta-called by the other player.
“You have a set?” he asked. The answer was no and Jungblut’s A
A
was in good shape against his opponent’s K
Q
. The turn was the 5
and the river was the 8
, meaning Jungblut doubled up to 21K.
We watched as Garrett “GBecks” Beckman checked from the small blind on a board reading Q
8
6
7
and the other player involved in the hand bet out 900 from middle position. Garrett almost beat him into the pot, quickly moving all-in for an additional 3.6K.
“You must have 9-10, ” the other player said. Despite convincing himself that Beckman had the straight, curiosity got to the big-stacked player and he called with 6
7
for two pair while Beckman held 5
7
for a pair and an open-ended straight draw. The river T
was no help to Garrett and he was eliminated shortly before the second break. Other early eliminations include Phil “USCPhildo” Collins, Jeff “jeffboski” Sluzinski, Eric “Rizen” Lynch and Darryll “DFish” Fish.

WSOP 2009 Event #25: $5K PLO H/L
Looks like there won’t be a second Omaha bracelet in Jason “treysfull21″ Mercier’s future…at least not in the next two days. We caught up with a short-stacked Mercier in the $5K PLO H/L event where he raised to 5.6K from under the gun with the blinds at 800/1,600. Roland de Wolfe called from the button and the duo saw a flop of J
T
T
. Jason paused momentarily before moving all-in for his last 10K or so. Roland called and Jason said, “I have a pair of threes,” as he flipped up A
5
3
3
. Roland showed his {kd]K
{6h]2
, which held as the turn and river came 8
8
to give de Wolfe kings up and eliminate Mercier early in day two.
WSOP 2009 Event #24: $1.5K NLHE
Andy “BKiCe” Seth continues to lead the way in Event No. 24. We caught him busting a player earlier to move over the two million chip mark. After the first player to act made a raise with the blinds at 12K/24K/3K, Seth made a small re-raise to 69K more. The other player called and the flop was Q
T
6
. Seth led out for 85K and the other player moved all in. Seth snap-called with this K
K
and was way ahead of his opponent’s K
J
. There was no help for the all-in player on the turn (4
) or river (6
) and he was eliminated.
Seth had 2.3 million at the most recent count while Glenn “TheGFactor” McCaffery had 1.1 million and Brian “fitzfitz” Fitzpatrick had 800K. There 10 remaining players have now gone on dinner break.
