Six P5ers survived Day 1 of the $5K PLO Event #35. One of them was not Jamie “thecronic420″ Rosen (pictured left).
Rosen, closing in on the 100K chip mark, found out how cruel the game of Omaha can be during the final level of the night. On a board of 7
4
2
Jamie and another player got it all in with Jamie’s tournament life on the line:
Rosen: J
6
5
3
Opponent: A
9
8
7
The turn and river brough the 9
and T
, giving his opponent two pair, and Rosen was sent home. Scott “BigRiskky” Clements was another casualty toward the end of the night.
While Rosen’s stack crumbed Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi thrived in Level 10. We first caught up with Mizzi betting 35K on a board of K
5
4
Q
J
with more than 45K in the pot already. His opponent took close to eight minutes thinking it over before Fabrice Soulier angrily got up from his chair and requested a clock be put on the player. Mizzi sat motionless in his seat and just before the one minute of time ran down his opponent made the call. Mizzi showed K
K
8
7
for top set and the other player mucked, shipping a massive pot over to Sorel.
Mizzi picked up another big pot later on when he called a 3-bet all in from a short stack with 8
7
6
5
and made a winning straight when the board ran out 9
7
4
2
3
. He lost a pot to Fabrice Soulier on the last hand of the night but Mizzi is near the top of the leaderboard heading into Day 2 with 177K.
Isaac “westmenloAA” Baron (pictured right) had the chip lead at one point today but watched his stack dwindle during the evening. We did see him get involved in a sizable pot with a half our left of play. Three players saw the flop of Q
T
3
and the player in the small blind bet 8K with 13K left behind in his stack. Baron raised all in, having both players covered and the other player in the hand moved in for his last 6K. The small blind decided to fold and he was pleased to see that Baron had flopped a small flush with his 9
6
5
6
, which held up against K
K
Q
9
to eliminate the short stack. Baron finished Day 1 with 86K, right at the average.
We tried our very best to catch a Mike “SirWatts” Watson hand during the last hour of the night and sure enough, on the very last hand of the day, Watson and Bruno Fitoussi saw a flop of A
Q
7
. Watson bet 2.4K and Fitoussi folded. Yeah, that’s all we got, but Watson will return tomorrow with 52K so we’re bound to see some action.
Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy (148.8K), Clayton “clayton_27″ Newman (52K) and Justin “BoostedJ” Smith (45K) were the others making it through the day.
The remaining 64 players will return at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow and attempt to play down to a final table. At this pace it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
WSOP 2009 Event #34: $1.5K NLHE
Play was paused in the $1.5K NLHE so the blue 500 chips can be colored up and players could take another twenty minute break. One player who could probably use the time off is Full Tilt Pro Jared “TheWacoKidd” Hamby. In his defense, Jared has the right to be a little steamed. We missed the hands in which Hamby fled from the nit cave to build his stack from 90K to 380K, but there appears to have been a snafu along the way. Shortly after Hamby doubled up his 186K stack, he realized he only had around 340K sitting in front of him. For those of you who aren’t math majors, 340K is less than twice 186K, so somewhere along the way Hamby was shorted approximately 35K in chips. Only two hands had passed and the only chips Hamby put in the pot were ante chips, so there seemed to be no way those chips made it into his stack into the first place.
The dealer called the floor and explained the situation. After several lengthy discussions and debates with more than one floor person, Jared was told there was no conclusive proof on the surveillance tape that the dealer made a counting error when counting down his stack at the end of his double up. As he left for the break, Hamby told us he is almost positive the dealer only counted out 100K instead of 134K at one point during the countdown of his stack, which would account for the discrepancy. Hamby was clearly frustrated at the floor’s ruling that nothing could be done, but he is still sitting with one of the largest stacks in play at 420K.
While Hamby tried to deal with the floor directors, several other players saw their $1.5K NLHE dreams come to an end. Scott “mindwise” Pendergrast (pictured right) was at Hamby’s table as the debate began. We watched as a player opened to 22K from under the gun with the blinds at 4K/8K ante 1K and it folded around to Pendergrast in the small blind, who moved all-in for 31K more. The player clearly wasn’t enthused about calling, but eventually decided to do just that with 7
8
. Scott held the lead for the moment with his K
T
and he appeared poised for a double up when the flop came down K
J
T
. The turn was a harmless 2
, but the 9
on the river completed the other player’s gut shot straight draw and eliminated Pendergrast with around 40 players left in the field.
Joining him on the rail are Adam “csimmsux” Geyer and Cody “thugmoneymkr” Slaubaugh.
