High-Fives For Five-High! by Brett on 06.28.09, 4:52 am

Five-high was good and bad for Cody “thugmoneymkr” Slaubaugh (pictured right) during the last level of play in the $1.5K NLHE event. Let’s start with the bad. With the blinds at 600/1,200 ante 100 it folded around to Cody in the small blind and he quickly grabbed a big stack of yellow 1K chips and announced “all-in”. The player in the big blind, who only had around 12K glanced at his cards and announced “call.” As he flipped up pocket kings, Slaubaugh retaliated by revealing 2-5 offsuit.

“So it’s close,” tablemate Tony Cousineau joked. The table got excited when the door card was a deuce and Cody even picked up a gut shot straight draw on the turn. He failed to crack the kings, but the 12K was just a minor dent to his nearly 100K stack.

A little while later we caught up with Cody again in the middle of a heads-up hand where the board read K627 the other player in the hand checked to Slaubaugh who bet 10.4K into a 13K pot. The other player thought briefly and called. The river was the 8 and the other player checked again. Cody thought for a minute before pushing out a 38K bet, which would cost the other player more than half his stack to call. The other player seemed torn about what to do and eventually decided to fold. Slaubaugh scooped the big pot and built his stack up to 128K. After the hand he stepped away from the table to tell us that he had five high that hand as well. Slaubaugh should end the day towards the top of the chip counts with 125.9K.

Jason “JP OSU” Potter (pictured left) will be right up there with Slaubaugh tomorrow. He was very active the last levels of the day. We caught up with him mid-hand with the board reading 966 and his opponent checked to Potter, who bet 8.2K into what looked like an 11K pot. The turn was the 5 and the other player checked once again. Potter didn’t hesitate before announcing “all-in”, having his opponent’s remaining 20K easily covered. The other player threw it away and Jason picked up yet another pot.

Potter ended the day with 100.1K. He told us he really wanted to make it over the 100K mark before the day was over. “So, I had to take down the last hand with the old deuce three,” Potter explained with a smile. His tablemate, Tom “titantom32″ Braband, may not be as excited about how the day ended. After getting up as high as 120K, Braband ended play today with 67.3K.

One player didn’t make it to the end of the day. Jonathan “FatalError” Aguiar got in a preflop raising war with another player at his table that resulted in the two getting it all-in with Aguiar holding A-K to the other player’s pocket queens. The queens flopped top set and Aguiar was eliminated towards the beginning of Level 10.
