Goodnight from the Rio! by Rich on 06.19.09, 6:19 am

Event #35 finished the evening with eleven runners still vying for a WSOP gold bracelet.

Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi (pictured left) ended the night as the chip leader with 970K after winning the last pot of the night on his table. There was almost 100K in the pot, but the dealer washed the cards before we could get a peak at the hands.

During the last two hours of the evening, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy made a tough call against Isaac “Mr. Menlo” Baron. After leading out on the flop and turn, Bax checked with the board reading KT67J, and Baron bet 140K. Josephy tanked for quite some time before making the call. Isaac announced that he only had one pair, and Cliff showed K-J-J-T for a set of jacks. With the pot Bax became chip leader with close to a million, but dropped down to 805K before night’s end.

Baron was crippled, and will enter tomorrow as the short stack with 170K.

Play will resume at 1 p.m. local time tomorrow.

WSOP 2009 EVENT #37 STUD 8 OR BETTER

Event #37 has wrapped up its first day of play. Jon “PearlJammer” Turner had an up and down day but finished with 41K. Annie Duke and Scott “BigRiskky” Clements finished around the 40K mark as well.

Jimmy “gobboboy” Fricke finished around 37K, but what’s more impressive is that he was down to 5K at one point in the evening. Fricke got some help though when he scooped a big pot with a straight flush and the nut low.

Justin Bonomo, Barry Greenstein, Jason “treysfull21″ Mercier and Gavin Smith all hit the rail before day’s end.

Day 2 will begin tomorrow at 2 p.m. here at the Rio.
