Scott “SCTrojans” Freeman (pictured left) just finished second-best in a three-way all in but managed to add 20K to his stack in the $2.5K NLHE event. Here’s how it went down:
With blinds at 1.2K/2.4K, Freeman opened for 6.1K in early position and Nicolay Evdakov called on the button. The big blind moved all in for 15K more and then Freeman announced that he was all in for 65K total. Evdakov, who had everyone outchipped, took a moment before deciding to call and a huge pot was on the line:
Freeman: 3
3
Evdakov: A
Q
Big Blind: A
K
Freeman escaped the 8
7
2
flop but the K
left him drawing to two outs for the whole pot. The 8
fell on the river, sending a pot of more than 60K to the big blind. In the end, Freeman mananged to increase his stack to 85K by winning the side pot against Evdakov. He didn’t seem too dipleased with the result.
Carter “ckingusc” King has built his stack to around 160K after eliminating Alex “Kadabra” Keating. The two flipped for an enormous pot and King’s pair of tens held on against Keating’s A-Q. King has almost double the chip average, which is 86K with 85 players left.
Joining Keating on the rail since our last report were Darren Elias and Joe Sebok. Phil Ivey is currently at 85K. We just felt that was worth mentioning.
The following P5ers are still alive:
Jon “therookieQQ9″ Plens - 170K
Garrett “GBecks” Beckman - 114K
Keven “Stammdogg” Stammen - 95K
Matt “mlagoo” LaGarde - 70K
Alex Jacob - 51K
Justin “looshle” Pechie - 49K
WSOP Event #15: $5K NLHE
Level 5 just wrapped up in Event #15, the $5K NLHE and 450 of the 655 original entrants remain. As we wandered the room during the past level it still looked jam packed of P5ers, several of whom possess some sizeable stacks. After hearing via Twitter that Jeff “yellowsub” Williams had crossed the 50K chip mark, we came by to find out just how he wrangled such a sizeable stack so early on. He said most of the pots were pretty standard — flopped set to top pair to eliminate Heather Sue Mercer and encountered a similar situation against another player just a few hands later. “I flop like a pro,” Jeff explained.
Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi connected with the 8
7
7
flop during the 100/200 ante 25 level and managed to get the bulk of his remaining 9.4K in chips on the flop against a slightly shorter stacked opponent holding K
7
for trip sevens. His opponent called the bet and turned up A
4
for the nut flush draw. The 6
gave the other player a straight draw to go with his flush draw and the 5
on the river made the 4-8 straight that knocked Sorel down to just 1K in chips. Last we checked he was still in trying to grind his way back up. Some players we don’t see anymore are Jason “treysfull21″ Mercier and Chris “SLOPPYKLOD” Klodnicki, who were recently eliminated.
One final note from the $5K event is that we would like to award Steve “MrTimCaum” O’Dwyer the “Plan Ahead” award of the day for managing to phone in an extensive Thai food take out order while two other players at his table tangled in a big pot. He got the order in, caught all the action at the table, and didn’t even miss a hand. Impressive.
Here are some chip counts from the end of Level 5:
Jeff “yellowsub” Williams - 58K
Blair “blur5f6″ Hinkle - 46K
Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers - 32K
VaShon “JulianVerse” Watkins - 31K
Tyler “Tydean” Smith - 30K
George “The Butler” Dietz - 25K
Amanda “Mandy_B” Baker - 22K
Mohsin “chicagocards1″ Charania - 22K
John “JRD312″ Dolan - 20.5K
Darryll “DFish” Fish - 20K
Scott “gunning4you” Seiver - 15K
Chance “chancecards” Kormuth - 13K
Neil “puggy82″ Stewart - 13K
Michael “benvo123″ Benvenuti - 9K
Matt “mattg1983″ Graham - 8.5K
Jordan “scarface_79″ Smith - 8.5K
Christain “charder30″ Charder - 7.5K
Jamie “pokerjamers” Armstrong- 7K (don’t worry, we looked and hard to make sure he wasn’t the imposter)
Jared “TheWacoKidd” Hamby - 7K
Jamie “thecronic420″ Rosen - 5K
WSOP 2009 Event #11: $2K NLHE
Scott “stpauli11″ Hall just won a huge pot with A-K vs. A-5 to bust a player in 8th place. The two got it in preflop with Hall calling the other player’s all-in with A-K, which had the other player’s A-5 in a spot of trouble. The board ran out 10-10-3-3 and it looked like it was going to be a chop until Hall spiked a king on the river to take the pot and lock up at least a 7th place finish.
WSOP Event #12: $10K Mixed Game Championship
Eric “EFro” Froehlich, Brian “snagglepuss” Powell, and Ozzy “Ozzy87″ Sheikh have all busted out of the event in 17th, 13th, and 12th respectively. With nine players left P5er Scott “dorinvandy” Dorin is the massive chip leader, holding 1.4 million compared to Huck Seed, who is sitting at second in chips with 860K.
WSOP Event #14: $5K 6-Handed LHE
We made a pilgrimage out to the Brasilia room to check in on the non-hold’em games and check on our runners still in the LHE event. When we made our pass through, here are some of the chip counts we spotted:
Brock “t_soprano” Parker told us he went from a low of 3.8K all the way up to 50K in a matter of 45 minutes — an impressive feat in any event, but especially awe-inspiring considering this is limit poker we’re talking about. Even more impressive is that another P5er, Barry “barryg1″ Greenstein, accomplished a similar rally, going from 4K to 50K in roughly the same amount of time.
The current chip leader is Shawn “sbuck21″ Buchanan, who is currently sitting at 125K, while Aaron “NDGrinder59″ Steury is still holding strong with 60K.
