The tournaments at Foxwoods used to be some of the biggest fields outside the WSOP with numbers reaching well into the 600s. The ballroom that is the main area for tournament play used to be filled to capacity with poker tables on both day 1s with additional tables in the regular poker room and even a few upstairs in a gaming area usually used for blackjack tables.
This year, the two starting days brought a combined total of only 412 players that have entered the Foxwoods World Poker Finals, off from the 575 that entered last year for this tourney. An influx of other poker tournaments around the country and the world, less online satellites and no direct buyin satellites from the sites, and a general economic downturn have all contributed to smaller fields, but even with all that the tournaments are still large enough to support two starting days and carry top prizes of over a million dollars.
