Chips Flying in $5K Six-Handed NLHE by Brett on 07.01.09, 5:55 pm

Six-handed No Limit Hold ‘em events can always be counted on for entertainment — especially when you’ve got a field loaded with talent like today’s $5K restart, which had 49 P5ers returning with their eyes set on a $1 million first prize. The poker warfare began right from the get-go:

Steve “thorladen” Weinstein, who began the day at 59K, lost most of his stack to the player to his right before doubling back though him a few hands later. With blinds at 800/1600 action folded around to his opponent in the small blind, who pushed a pile of 5K orange chips into the pot, effectively putting Weinstien all in. Steve called off his remaining 19K with AJ, which was well ahead of the other player’s A6. The TT8K9 board gave Weinstein the best hand, increasing his stack back to around 40K.

Lex “RaSZi” Veldhuis (pictured left) was also able to double up during the first level of the day. He got his 116K chips in preflop with KK against an opponent’s AQ and faded any disaster after his opponent flopped the Q when Velduis turned the K to seal the hand. He’s up to 240K with Level 1 coming to a close.

Jose “head2782″ Severino sent a player packing when he called a player’s shove from the cutoff for 15K with A9. His hand bested the other player’s KQ when the dealer rolled out the 6-5-3-6-7 board and Severino is among the chip leaders with 190K.

Owen “ocrowe” Crowe (pictured right)lost some of his chips early on in Level 11. Crowe led out for 6.5K on a 643 flop and his opponent called. The turn was the T and Owen led out again, this time for 12.4K. His opponent cut-out enough chips for a call but stalled a bit. He ruffled his chips for a minute before sliding them into the into the middle. The dealer wrapped the table and delivered the A on the river. Crowe fired a third bullet, a 17.3K bullet. Owen’s opponent gathered chips slowly. He assembled a call and hesitated for a moment before finally making the call. Crowe showed A5x but lost when his opponent tabled A7 for a better kicker. After the hand Owen is left with around 20K.

Taylor “El Mastemind” McFarland was one of many to meet his demise ealry in the day. McFarland sat at a stacked table that included David Chui, Bill Edler, Darrell “Gigabet” Dicken, Aurelien Guiglini and Kenna James, and it was Chiu who got the best of him. McFarland raised to 3.7K from unfer the gun and Chui 3-bet to 15K in middle position. McFarland moved all in for around 50K more and Chui quickly called:

McFarland: 99
Chui: AK

Taylor maintained his lead on the TT2 flop but hit the A on the turn to take control. The Q river sent McFarland to the rail but he seemed to be in good spirits, wishing Guiglini luck on his way out.

Brent “bhanks11″ Hanks can be added to the list of casualties. Hanks’ opponent led out for 21K on a 987 board. Brent tanked for upwards to five minutes before shrugging and raising all in. Hanks only had about 50K and his opponent called tabling two black tens. Brent’s K8 needed some help, but the 7 on the turn and the J on the river did not improve his hand eliminating him from the tournament.

Others missing from their seats are Adam “Roothlus” Levy, Allen “albari” Bari and Kush Patel. We’ll confirm their status in our next update.
