Carving His Competition by Brett on 06.12.09, 3:11 am

Jason “JCarver” Somerville was the first P5er to advance to tomorrow’s $1,500 NLHE Shootout final table. In what was certainly the most intriguing (for us anyway) heads up match of the day, Somerville bested Chris “SLOPPYKLOD” Klodnicki to move on for a chance at his first bracelet and a prize of $313,673.

Somerville (pictured left) handed Klodnicki a cooler to knock him out of the tournament. On a board of T86, Klodnicki got all of his chips in (with Somerville having him covered) and Chris showed 97 for a straight with a straight-flush draw. Somerville had K8 for middle pair and a flush draw. The 2 left Klodnicki dawring to one out and he was unable to hit, knocking him out one short of the final table.

Friday’s final table will be Somerville’s first ever at the WSOP. Also looking to make his first final table appearance is Mike “shipitthisway” McNeil, who is currently heads up and trailing his opponent by a slim margin of 250K-200K.

Kyle “dumpingkgb” Brossia’s tournament ended when he moved has last 58K in preflop with blinds at 2K/4K and his opponent called with K7. Kyle’s K8 was in great shape and looked even better when the dealer revealed the 872 flop. However, the turn was a dagger through his heart as the 7 peeled off and he couldn’t hit one of his last two outs on the river to double up. It was a disappointing end to a great run but Brossia still earned his third ever cash at the WSOP.

Seven players have moved on to tomorrow’s final round and three heads-up matches are in progress. We’ll continue tracking McNeil’s progress until his match is over. He’s already started ordering Heinekens in hopes that it ends soon.

WSOP 2009 Event #24: $1.5K NLHE

Devin “tranquilchaos” Porter (pictured right) is probably happy his table is about to break. With the blinds at 400/800 ante 100 the player in the hijack raised to 2.1K and Devein reraised behind him to 6.2K. The player in the big blind then moved all-in for 7.8K total and the initial raiser agonized before folding. Porter was priced in to call with the stellar holdings of 24 which were live against the other player’s KQ. Of course, then the flop came {4h]43 and the other player was left drawing very very slim. The 9 on the turn left him drawing dead and he was eliminated while Porter bashfully scooped the pot.

“I guess I can’t 3-bet you anymore, huh?” Devin asked the player who folded.

Pat “BigRed0000″ Stemper, who was recently moved to the table, then chimed in with a smile. “So there’s my answer on whether you play online or not.”

“I don’t know which one I’d rather have,” Devin said later. “Seven thousand chips more and a terrible image or seven thousand less without my image ruined.”

Thankfully, Porter’s table is three tables away from breaking so he can go back to 3-betting light very shortly.

Dan “Wretchy” Martin’s luck today has been less fortunate. We caught up in a blind versus blind confrontation where Dan bet out 4.5K into approximately an 8K pot with the board reading J326 and his opponent thought a while before calling, leaving just 6.8K behind. The river J paired the board and Dan bet enough to put the other player all-in. He thought for a minute before calling and Martin attempted to muck his cards. The other player was then instructed by Martin and the dealer that he had to show his hand in order to win the pot and the player protested.

“I want to see his cards,” the man demanded. The dealer then pulled Dan’s hand out of the muck and turned up what looked like K-10. The other player turned over 4-5 for a straight and took the pot, dropping Dan down to just 4K. The very next hand Martin got it all-in holding AT to a different player’s KQ and th ace high held to double him up to nearly 10K.

Jimmy “gobboboy” Fricke made his exit recently when his pocket kings couldn’t hold against another player’s pocket aces. Tracey “xtrACEy” Nguyen was also eliminated after she raised preflop and got it all-in on an J-6-X board with two hearts holding AJ to the other player’s J6. The flopped two pair held and she was railbound.

WSOP 2009 Event #21: $3K HORSE

The betting limits are really starting to take their toll on the amount of play now that we are down to the final four. The short stacks have managed to stay alive several times though and even P5er Zac “Zacpacker” Fellows was able to obtain a much-needed double up. When play was still 6-handed, Fellows and Martin Eiking got the rest of Zac’s in on 5th street during Razz with the following cards showing:

Fellows:7TQ
Eiking: 655

Zac showed his A6 in the hole while Eiking’s 22 meant Fellows’ queen-low was good for the moment. Things only got worse for Eiking as he was dealt 4 then 5 giving him a paired low. Fellows fared much better, going 3 then 4 to make a seven low and double up.

Play in the event is now four-handed and Zac is sitting second in chips.
