We had an unfortunate situation in the third day of the $2K NLHE tournament. Jack “doctor_fun” Powell (pictured right) fell just short of the final table on a very painful hand. Powell opened to 58K with the blinds at 12K/24K/3K and action fell on Pat Atchison in the small blind. Atchison examined Powell’s stack before raising to 263K. The big blind folded and Powell went all in for a few thousand more. Atchison called and the hands were tabled:
Powell: A
A
Atchison: 4
4
The 4
in the window crushed Powell, but when the 3
and the 2
fanned out on the flop Jack gained some extra outs. The 3
on the turn stole those outs though, and the 2
on the river eliminated Powell from the tournament. Jack with have to settle with $42,880 for his efforts.
Jordan “scarface_79 Smith (1.1 million), Joe “Dyzalot” Morneau (935K), and Jonathan “therookieqq9″ Plens (735K) have all made the final table, though Plens is currently the short stack.
WSOP 2009 Event #36: $2K NLHE
The situation isn’t fatal, but things have taken a turn for the worse for another doctor, David “Doc Sands” Sands (pictured left) , in Day Two of the $2K LHE event. He texted us about his frustrating past level, explaining that first he got all-in against a short stack holding A-8 on a K-T-8 flop against the other player’s no-pair. Unfortunately for Sands, the other player rivered a queen to give him a bigger pair and the 12K pot.
A few hands later, Sands bumped heads with the same player when his pocket kings, the other player’s pocket aces, and Phil Hellmuth’s A-K all clashed in an epic 40K where the pocket rockets held to take it down. David now sits with around 11K with the betting limits at 1.2K/2.4K.
Brock “t_soprano” Parker appears to have had an equally rough start to his Day Two. We searched the field for Brock early in the day, but failed to find him, so we are presuming he was eliminated shortly after Day Two began.
One player who is faring much better in the event is Alex “Kadabra” Keating. After starting the day with 25K, Keating has since skyrocketed up the chip counts and now has 85K.
WSOP 2009 Event #39: $1.5K NLHE
Adam “csimmsux” Geyer picked up a nice double up late in Level Three when, with the blinds at 75/150, the players in the hijack and cutoff limped into the pot, the small blind completed, and Geyer raised an additional 750 on top. The player in the hijack called and everyone else folded. Both players checked the K
7
7
flop and Adam led out for 1.2K when the turn came T
. His opponent put in an almost min-raise to 2.5K total and Geyer stacked up the remainder of chips and stuck them in the pot.
It was only 1,150 more to the other player, but he knew he was in bad shape. “I put you on nothing, but I guess I have to call,” he said. He did just that and flipped up A
2
, which was trailing Geyer’s K
Q
for kings and sevens. The river K
gave adam a boat and he scooped the 9.5K pot.
While Geyer’s double up worked out, several other players weren’t as fortunate. We missed the pre-flop action, but when we reached Dylan “ImaLucSac” Linde’s table the board read K-7-6. Linde had placed a bet and his opponent pushed all-in. Dylan was covered, but didn’t hesitate to get his stack in the middle with 66. His opponent hesitated before turning his cards over. The player sweated his cards once more, shot Linde a look and then slam dunked two kings on the felt. Dylan was shocked by the apparent slow roll and after the turn and river blanked, he slowly stood up and left the table.
Isaac Haxton got his last 1.2K in holding A
Q
against Q
T
and the flop was T
5
3
. “That’s not the flop I was looking for,” Haxton joked. The J
on the turn brought four more outs, but the river blanked and Isaac hit the rail. Haxton was very gracious in defeat, wishing all of his former tablemates good luck.
David “The Maven” Chicotsky is also busto. “I had 6 high,” he told us. “I thought it was the nuts.” Joining him on the rail are Jason Gray, Dan “Wretchy” Martin, and Justin “jurollo” Rollo.
