The first of nine $1,500 No Limit Hold’ em events at the World Series of Poker has kicked off here at the Rio. Close to 2,800 players have already registered, with more expected during the first two levels of play.
P5er Grant “drossxyu” Hinkle (pictured at right)Â won this event last year, taking home $831,462 and his first gold bracelet. In case you don’t remember, Hinkle defeated James Akenhead when he made a move with 10-4 and made quads against Akenhead’s A-K. No word on whether Hinkle is here to defend his title.
The $1,000 NLHE “Stimulus” Event will resume at 1:00 PST and play all the way down until a champion is crowned. Amanda “MandyB” Baker (704K), Jamie “pokerjamers” Armstrong (568K) and Jack “doctor_fun” Powell (551K) sit near the top of the leaderboard with 50 players remaining. The winner will take home a massive payday of $771,106.
Several P5ers will return for Day 2 of the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event. All eighty-one players have earned a minimum of $2,761 as they played until the bubble burst late last night. Jason Mercier (227K) holds a substantial chip lead, while Matt “mattg1983″ Graham (66K), Matt “All In At 420″ Stout (19.5K), Darryl “GoPhish” Dauenhauer (19.4K), Jeff “yellowsub” Williams (14K) and Tim “tmay420″ West (12K) are holding on.
