Multiple times throughout the day it was announced that play would end at 27, but there is always the disclaimer on every tournament rule sheet that the tournament officials can make any changes they want at any time for any reason. The decision was made during the 4th level of play to go ahead and plan to play a full 5 levels today.
The final 27 was reached when Men “The Master” Nguyen busted in 28th place with just under 2 minutes left in the 4th level of play. Other players out near the bubble included Adam “Roothlus” Levy and Josh “Sdouble” Schlein. Levy was eliminated when his two pair fell to the rivered flush of Eugene Katchalov and Schlein moved all in preflop for around 80k (blinds were 2k / 4k with a 500 ante) and was called by November Niner Kevin Schaffel with pocket eights. The eights held up and Schlein was out just short of making the money.
On the actual bubble Bryan “badbeatninja” Devonshire (right) doubled up David Demanski. Thu Nguyen had made it 11,500 to open and David called. Devo raised to 31,500 and Nguyen folded but Demanski made the call leaving less than 100k behind. On the A
J
6
flop Demanski led out with an all in bet for 94,500. At this point the tables were playing hand for hand and the other 3 tables had already completed their hands. As Devo went into the tank on what to do the crowd gathered around, sensing a big hand and possible elimination putting them into the money. Using the “it’s hard to make a pair” logic Devo ended up calling with his A
4
only to see Demanski roll over the A
Q
. As hot has Devo has been there still was no help for him and he ended up doubling Demanski and having to take some of the chips off the top of his impressive architectural chip stack design.
A few hands before Devo was able to win some chips from Tony “DrunkPPlaya” Gargano in another hand where Devo had 3-bet preflop. Tony made it 10,500 and Devo raised to 32,500. Gargano called and the players checked to the river on a board that ended up Q
4
2
5
J
. At that point Devo bet 44,500 and Gargano made the call after some thought. Bryan showed the K
Q
which was good enough to take the pot.
A shortstacked Carter “ckingusc” King was in danger of being the bubble boy, at one point during hand for hand play moving his 42k chip stack all in preflop. Everyone folded though and Carter was able to pick up a pot uncontested, though he did show the A
K
after everyone folded.
The final 27 players are in the money and have redrawn for all new seats at the final three tables. After a 15 minutes break they will be back to play one more level for the night and then surviving players will return tomorrow to play down to the final table of 6 players.
