Big Pot Benefits Baron, Nearly Busts Jaka by Rachel on 06.08.09, 7:05 am

We told you that Darryll “DFish” Fish was doing all he could to stay alive in the $5K NLHE event, but he was eliminated soon after our last post. He raised from the cutoff, and was re-raised by Faraz “The-Toilet” Jaka, (pictured at left) who was on the button. Fish four-bet all in and Jaka called. Darryll held A-J, but was behind Faraz’s A-Q. Fish received no help from the board, and was eliminated in 25th place, earning $21,026.

Jaka was never in danger of elimination all day until he found himself in the biggest pots of the tournament. Ben Tollerene open shoved for 123K in middle position, and Jaka called on the button. Isaac “westmenloAA” Baron tanked for a bit, and asked Jaka for an exact chip count. Faraz obliged, and Baron then re-shoved. Jaka called and the hands were turned up.

Baron: AA
Jaka: AK
Tollerene: T9

The dealer flopped Q64, and Baron remained well ahead. The Q on the turn ended it, and, after the meaningless 2 fell on the river, Isaac raked in a 1.3 million chip pot. Baron ended the day with 1.1 million after doubling up a short stack during the final level of play, but he will still have the chip lead when play starts tomorrow.

Jaka was crippled by the hand and ended up all in with TT against the AQ of Thomas Keller. Keller flopped two queens and Jaka hit the rail, earning $27,029.

Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers and Billy “Patrolman35″ Kopp both lost sizable pots near the end of the night. Sowers lost over 200K when he ran A-J into the A-K of Liya Gerasimova. Just moments later Kopp ran A-Q into Lars Bonding’s A-K at the other table. Billy lost 250K on the hand, and finished the night with 693K. Sowers ended with 583K.

Danny “dannyills” Illingworth took a few hits late and dropped to 850K, while Tom “titantom32″ Braband and David “raptor517″ Benefield remained relatively quiet during the last levels, finishing with 474K and 239K respectively.

The biggest buzz came at the completion of the evening though. When 3 a.m. rolled along, the tournament director announced that one more hand would be played. When play officially ended, the players received word that they would resume at noon on Monday instead of the customary 2 p.m.

“Thats ridiculous!” Lars Bonding shouted. The vast majority of players were just as mad, but director Steve Frezer insisted there was nothing he could do. Tomorrow’s final table is scheduled to air online, so the Frezer was forced to move up the restart time. The complaints continued throughout the bagging process.

Thomas Keller even suggested everyone just agree to show up late.

“Someone will come and steal the blinds,” Benefield insisted.

The 17 remaining players will have to settle for a few hours of sleep. They have nine hours before play begins, and it won’t end until a champion is crowned.

WSOP EVENT #18: $10K OMAHA H/L

Okay, so they’re not PocketFivers, but the conversation between Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey and Howard Lederer was too entertaining not to share. Hellmuth was seated at the table directly behind Ivey and Lederer (who were seated next to each other) when one of Hellmuth’s favorite topics came up…WSOP bracelets.

“Who knows, you might catch me in four or five years,” Hellmuth, owner of 11 bracelets, said to Ivey before suggesting that he of course planned to win a few more bracelets in the meantime.

“I can’t catch you in five years,” said Ivey, who just won his six bracelet this year. He paused for a while then said. “I bet I catch you in twenty years.”

This time Hellmuth was the one who paused before saying, “You may or may not.”

Howard couldn’t help himself any longer, saying indignantly, “He may or may not?!? You stand by that statement?” (Howard clearly thinks this won’t be a problem for Ivey.)

“I think in 20 years I’ll have 18,” Hellmuth said. “That what I think. Everyone thinks differently.”

Perhaps you think differently as well.

By the end of the night Lederer had busted, but Ivey had a big stack yet again in this World Series. One of the biggest stacks in the room belonged to Scott “BigRiskky” Clements, (pictured at right) who ended the day with 130,800 after starting with 30K.

Other end of day chip counts:

Barry “barryg1″ Greenstein - 41.6K
Annie Duke - 40.7K
Justin “Boosted J” Smith - 26.6K
Eric “jakz101″ Crane - 25.7K
Brandon Cantu - 23K
Bryan “badbeatninja” Devonshire - 16.2K
