In the course of two hands Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin went from being poised to pick up his second bracelet of the year to third place finisher in the $10K PLHE event. Baldwin was sitting on the chip lead with 3.2 million chips and the blinds at 60K/120K when Kirill Gerasimov raised to 300K from the button and Baldwin called out of the small blind. The flop came down A
9
8
and Eric checked to Kirill who bet 375K. Baldwin then check-raised the size of the pot for an additional 1.4 million. Gerasimov moved all-in and Baldwin called. Eric flipped up A
J
and he got the bad news when Kirill revealed that he held A
9
for a flopped two pair. Baldwin was unable to make a bigger two pair on the turn or river and was left with just 420K in chips.
Baldwin remained upbeat in the midst of the big chip loss. He joked to his rail, “hey guess how many chips I have?,” which generated a big chuckle from his large cheering section.
The very next hand Baldwin moved all-in from the button and John Kabbaj called out of the small blind. Eric showed J
6
while Kabbaj held A
5
. Once again, Baldwin’s opponent flopped two pair on him as the board came down A
Q
5
. A 6
on the turn gave Baldwin two outs to take down the pot, but instead he hit the J
on the river, which was not enough to save him from elimination. This marks the second deep run for Eric Baldwin in just two weeks. He earned $259,534 for his finish.
WSOP 2009 Event #47: $2.5K Mixed Hold ‘em
We’re down to our final 10 players in the $2.5K Mixed Hold ‘em event and they’re in the process of merging into one “unofficial” final table. We’ll have one more elimination and then players will bag up their chips for the night. Randy “Randers” Haddox (450K) and Barry “barryg1″ Greenstein (280K) are still in contention for the bracelet and $278,804 awarded to tomorrow’s winner.
WSOP 2009 Event #48: $1.5K PLO Hi/Lo
Matt “SamENole” Smith’s unfullfilling World Series of Poker continued in today’s $1.5K PLO Hi/Lo as he was eliminated 35 players short of the money. It came in rather ugly fashion: With blinds at 500/1000 Smith (pictured right) raised to 3.5K and one player called. The flop brought 9-8-4 and Smith bet 10.5K. His opponent snap-called. He then moved in for his remaining few thousand when the 7s hit the turn and his opponent quickly called:
Smith: A
J
J
3
Opponent: A
K

A nasty 9
hit the river and the other player scooped the entire pot, sending Smith on his way out of the Rio.
Only 102 of the original 762 players are still alive here on Day 1. The top 72 get paid. Here’s a look at the P5ers still in the field with the average stack now at 34K:

Craig “MrCasino” Gray - 38K
Stewart “StuMan23″ Yancik - 35K
Aaron “gotcha55″ Kanter - 23.5K
Jesse “JMaster30″ Cohen - 17K
