Atimos and Adios by Court on 09.29.09, 12:49 pm

Talk about running hot.  Name a major tournament that Yevgeniy “Atimos” Timoshenko has not won lately.  He is making a strong effort to add the World Series of Poker Europe presented by Betfair to his already long list of titles in the last year.  Timoshenko recently won the largest pot of the tournament, then lost a pot where he doubled another player up but still holds a monstrous stack and the chip lead.  As the field has dropped down to 50 player, and Timoshenko has been amassing a mountain of chips, other players have been falling by the wayside.  Annette “Annette_15″ Obrestad, Justin “Boosted J” Smith and Steven “TheZadester” Levy were all eliminated during the last level coming up short of the money.

With the top 36 getting paid and only 50 remaining the money bubble looms closer but for now the talk of the tournament is more about Timoshenko (right) than the money bubble.  Yevgeniy won the massive pot on a board of A-9-4-5-4 with two hearts on the flop and the flush not getting there.  Timoshenko’s set of nines was good against Marc Goodwin’s AQ and since then Timoshenko has had trouble keeping a hint of a smile off his face.

Even after doubling a player up Yevgeniy was still smiling behind his pile of chips.  He had raised to 6k preflop near the end of the 1,200 / 2,400 300 ante level and one player called.  On the J92 flop both players checked and with the 6 turn Timoshenko called a 9k bet.  On the A river the other player moved all in for 63,500 and after some thought Timoshenko announced his call.  The other player showed the T4 for a flush and Yevgeniy mucked his hand.  This was all being recorded by the cameras though and after his hand was touched to the muck it was given back to him and a small video recorder was put on the table for Timoshenko to show his hole cards to.  In doing so he inadvertently flipped the A over and then decided since that card had been shown he might as well show the 9 as well so he flipped it up too.  Even after losing 80k on the hand Timoshenko still has around 570k and is the chip leader of the tournament.

Justin “Boosted J” Smith
just called a raise preflop earlier today with aces and the hand worked out where he was able to bust Nadeem “Deemer6″ Riaz.  Smith has since been moved to the secondary feature table and again just called an opening raise with aces.  This time it came back to bite him though and when he raised a bet from Arnaud Mattern on the river of a paired board Mattern made the call and showed Smith trip eights.  Smith’s river raise to around 50k left him only 20k in his stack and he was soon all in preflop with Daniel Negreanu making the call.

Negreanu called from the blinds with A6 and his hand held up against the K2 of Smith to send Justin to the sidelines.

Annette’s charge to make herself a repeat champion at the WSOPE ended when she ran into Eric “P3achy_keen” Liu’s AK.  Annette had made a move with QJ and her hand did not improve enough to overcome Liu’s AK.  The table she was at, with Liu and Andrew “luckychewy” Lichtenberger had since been moved to take the spot at the main feature table, sans Annette.

The blinds are going to 1,500 / 3,000 with a 400 ante.  After the completion of that level players will get an hour and a half dinner break before returning to play down to the final 27.  It is doubtful players will reach the money before dinner break, but being only 14 players away from it it is possible that they get there before the break.
