With a well earned reputation for being tight it can be hard to catch Jonathan “FatalError” Aguiar (pictured) in a hand. He did play one of the biggest pots of the tournament so far though, and eliminated November Niner Steven Begleiter in the process. What would it take for Aguiar to be involved in such a large hand so early? Well this time all it took was a straight flush. After raking in the big pot Aguiar has exlipsed the 100k mark and his stack of nearly 110k is the largest in the tournament - for the time being at least.
It looked like Begleiter was on his way to turning in another impressive performance. After making the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event Begleiter next went to the WPT tournament at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles where he held the chip lead for much of the tournament before being eliminated in 9th place after an impressive run. Begleiter built up a stack that was among the chip leaders early on here at the World Series of Poker Europe, but he ultimately made an early exit after running into Aguiar’s straight flush. Whether any of the November Niners will be able to put together a strong run here at the WSOPE is yet to be seen with today’s play only about half done and a full flight of players still slated to begin the action tomorrow.
In news that shouldn’t really surprise anyone, Brandon Cantu has made himself the talk of the tournament early on with a bluff that anyone that has ever seen or heard about Cantu should know is well within his playbook. After raising preflop and betting on the T-6-6 rainbow flop Cantu then checked the offsuit 5 on the turn. Markus Golser bet 3k, Cantu made it 10k, Golser bumped it to 17k and Cantu then put in yet another raise, covering the 11k Golser had left in his stack. Golser folded with an amount approaching 2/3rds of his stack in the pot and Cantu proudly showed his A7 as he raked in the pot.
Missing in action: Darren “darrenelias” Elias. He has been stealthy today in a black hood and located in the crowded under the steps area but is vacant from his earlier seat so chances are he has been eliminated from the tournament. If he turns up later in the day, well, then we will start covering him again and retract his elimination.
