Aguiar Deals “gboro780″ Fatal Blow by Rachel on 05.31.09, 4:46 am

Players around the table were still discussing the following hand that occurred in the 1K NLHE event several minutes after it ended, when Jonathan “FatalError” Aguiar cleared things up nicely.

“Obviously, we have a little bit of history,” he said, referring to the former holder of the chips he was stacking, Steve “gboro780” Gross (pictured at left).

The blinds were 400/800 with a 100-chip ante. A flop of 763 had already been dealt with about 6K in the pot when we joined the action and Aguiar had bet 3.8K. Gross took a while before raising to 8.5K. Aguiar, who had the biggest stack at the table, eventually decided to move all in. Gross snap-called his the rest of his stack (which Aguiar later estimated was 27K) with J7 for top pair, and Aguiar was surprised to find himself ahead with 99. The board ran out 2T, and Aguiar was awarded the huge pot just before play ended for the night.

Aguiar is among the overall chip leaders at the end of Day 1A with 93K while Gross was eliminated.

Also near the top of the leader board is Jonathan “driverseati” Tamayo (pictured at right), who bagged 107.5K. Tamayo and the rest of the Day 1A players will return at 2 p.m. on Monday with the survivors of Day 1B.

Across the room, Mark “pgh987″ Busch got his long requested double up when he moved all-in from the button for his last 10K and got a quick call from the big blind, who held pocket kings.  They were a little bit ahead of Busch’s hand, 4-7, but later Mark explained to us that the small blind folded A-K to an eight big blind shove earlier in the evening so it felt like a good place to steal.

The table let out gasps and yelps as the flop came down T77.  Mark still wasn’t completely in the clear after the T fell on the turn, but the 7 on the river sealed the deal for him and shipped him the 20K pot.  The first words out of his mouth after the river peeled?  “Where’s P5s? Where’s P5s?!?”

Like Busch and Aguiar, Justin “lockdownpokah” Allen and Aditya “intervention” Argawal also ended the day on a huge upswing.  Allen had been hovering at around 25K for most of the early evening, but a card rush that included cracking kings with A-K after spiking an ace sent his chip stack soaring up to the 78.5K.

Argawal doubled his stack during the final 30 minutes of play. With blinds still at 400/800 ante 100, Seat 1 moved all in for 40K (yes, 40K) from under the gun and Agarwal called from middle position and the rest of the table folded. Agarwal’s QQ was able to hold against 99 when the board ran out A6457 and he increased his stack to 36K. Aditya finished Day 1 with 38.2K, well above the average.

WSOP EVENT #3: $1,500 OMAHA H/L

Jordan “Octavian_C” Rich put a player all in from middle position. His short stacked opponent rolled over A-T-5-2, and Rich tabled A-Q-8-3. When the hands were open, Eli Elezra blurted, “Ace-queen good for the high.” The dealer flopped K-9-7. “Ace-queen good for the high,” Elezra repeated. A jack turned, and again Eli reminded the table that Rich still held the high hand. The river was a 4, and Elezra’s prediction held true. “I told you,” Eli chuckled. Rich was all smiles too, chipping up to 135K.

Annie Duke was eliminated on the last hand before break. She pushed the remainder of her short stack in the middle with just T-T-6-5 and was called by two opponents, one of which was all in as well. Her opponents held A-Q-5-2 and A-8-4-2. The board ran out {K}63, but no one held a club flush and Annie remained ahead. The K on the turn was painless as well, but the 4 spiked on the river giving one opponent at 6 high straight. Duke was eliminated in 30th place, and earned $6,566.

As break began, Senovio “Dorsal Fin” Ramirez pulled us aside and insisted he explain a hand. According to Ramirez, with the blinds at 3K/6k, he raised to 12K from early position with Ax-3-5-7x. One player, in front of the button, called. Q-8-3 was the flop, and Ramirez check called a bet. The turn was a 10, and again he check called. The river brought another queen, and Ramirez said he checked again. “He bet…and I snapped called! He showed like A-4-K…2 or something, and I won the pot with a pair of threes.” Ramirez was very pleased with his play and has 129K in chips.
