We missed most of the action before the flop, but when we rejoined Matt “mcmatto” Affleck’s table the dealer was bring about 5.6K from Affleck and another player into the pot. (The table talk later informed us that Afflect had four-bet preflop.) The flop was dealt A
K
Q
. Afflect bet 6.5K and his opponent quickly called. The turn was 4
. Afflect bet 11.2K this time and his opponent casually tossed in another call. The river was the 5
. Affleck bet 24K, which was enough to essentially put his opponent all in.
“This is disgusting,” the other player said. “I think you have a set. I really do.”
He told the table the decision was going to take a while and more than one player told him to take his time. He again noted how disgusting the hand was and said he couldn’t imagine that Affleck didn’t have him beat. After a short walk away to the table and what looked to be a considerable amount of pain, the man folded Q
Q
face up.
Brent “BHanks11″ Hanks, who is seated at the table along with Anthony “D1rtyR1v3r” Nardi, tried to get Affleck to show his hand, saying multiple times that it would be good for the game if Affleck showed a bluff.
There is no dramatic ending to this story, though. Affleck mucked his cards and raked in the huge pot to increase his stack to just over 75K. He did turn to us a little later and let out a huge sigh, which looked to be a display of pure relief. But perhaps it was a fake display of pure relief…
As tables continue to break, more and more PocketFivers are finding themselves at the same table. Phil “USCPhildo” Collins has joined Frank “Frank1The1Tank” Calo and Kevin “kice32″ Iacafano at one table while Darren Elias is now seated to the right of Jeff “yellowsub” Williams. Cody “CalBandGreat” Shedd has also just sat down at Jason “JP_OSU” Potter’s table.
Potter was recently lamenting the fact that he hadn’t won a pot over 3K all day, but that changed shortly after he talked to us. Potter raised to 800 preflop and the big blind called. The flop was T
6
3
. The big blind check-called a bet of 1.2K from Potter. The turn was the 7
. The big blind checked again and Potter bet 2,275. The river was the A
. It was checked to Potter again, who threw in his last chip — an orange one worth 5K. His opponent quickly mucked and Potter moved back to around 15K.
When we last reported on Williams he was past the 100K threshold and one of the biggest stacks in the room. Jeff still has plenty of chips, but a recent hand left him with slightly less than before. We missed the preflop action, but we watched as the big blind checked the Q
J
8
flop and Williams led out for 2,350 (which we think was about half the size of the pot). The player on the button raised 5.4K on top and the big blind folded. Jeff took a good look at his opponent’s stack, which had about 30K behind his raise, and called. Both players checked when the 8
fell on the turn and Williams checked again. After a couple of minutes of thought, his opponent bet 8.2K and Jeff called relatively quickly. The other player showed 9
T
for a flopped straight and Williams mucked. He is still well above average with 80K, but didn’t look pleased about the setback.
David “Doc Sands” Sands is putting his big stack to use over at his table, too. With 2.4K already in the pot and the flop reading A
8
5
another player checked to Sands who bet 1,675. The other player called and they saw a turn of 4
. Both players checked and we were off to the river, which was a fourth club, the 9
. Sands’ opponent checked, David bet 3,650, and the other player called. David tapped the table and mucked his cards when the other player showed A
J
for a jack-high flush.
Steve “stevejpa” Paul-Ambrose also took a hit to his stack when he and another player got it all-in for a 50K+ pot on a 7
4
2
flop with Steve holding J
9
to the other player’s A
A
. The aces held as the board ran out 2
then 5
and Paul-Ambrose was left with 18.5K at the conclusion of the hand.
While Williams and Ambrose will live to see another hand, several other players weren’t so fortunate and saw their Main Event runs come to an end during the past hour. Joel “Gittindrunk” Shuflut’s J
T
failed to catch up with his opponent’s A-K and he was sent packing. A short-stacked Leo “Superfluous Man” Wolpert suffered a similar fate.
Matt “mattster24″ Sterling looked at us just after he busted with this message: “That was a fun day. I finally get a good hand…”
Sterling was all in on the flop of 9
5
3
when we walked up to his table. Sterling turned over K
K
but he was behind his opponent’s pocket fives. (Another player at the table celebrated folding pocket three on the flop when he saw the hands.) The turn and river were both aces and Sterling was eliminated.
Steve “MrSmokey1″ Billirakis just picked a bad spot to make a move over on Table 20. A player in middle position opened to 1.2K with the blinds at 150/300/25. The button called, the small blind folded and Billirakis re-raised to 4.7K from the big blind. Both his opponents called and the flop fell A
Q
T
. Steve checked, the original raiser checked and the button cut out 8.5K, tossing it in the pot. Out of turn, the original raiser appeared to push his hand forward. Billirakis’ eyes darted to this, and after a moment he looked at the dealer and announced, “All in.”
“Wow,” said his opponent, pulling his cards back. He eyed his own stack before flat calling the 35K bet. The button folded and the hands were tabled:
Billirakis: J
8
Middle Position: A
Q
Billirakis needed a king or running hearts and the 6
on the turn was a big blank. The river was the T
, and just like that Steve’s Main Event was over.
Isaac Haxton is also busto. Haxton ran two pair into a flush draw and was drawn out on by his opponent. Isaac was gracious in defeat, shaking hands with a number of players on his way to the exit.
Kyle “thetruth503″ Zartman managed to double up early in the last level of the day when a player opened for a raise to 1K with the blinds at 150/300 ante 25 and Kyle moved all-in over the top for 6,950 total. The other player called with his 9
9
and Zartman was off to the races with A
K
. Both Jordan “Octavian_C” Rich and Craig “MrCasino” Gray peeked over to see if their fellow Oregonian would survive and they were likely not happy to see the T
7
2
flop. The K
on the turn gave Zartman the lead in the hand, which he held on to as the river fell 8
. His double up brings his chip count up to 14.5K.
