AawNutz, He Won! Allen Carter is the Southern Poker Champion! by Jessica on 01.18.09, 2:41 am

Allen “AawwNutz” Carter’s (pictured right) slow and steady approach to this final table was serving him well here in heads up play as he managed to slowly chip away at Bobby Suer’s chips.  Suer dipped down as low as 750K and desperately needed a double up in order to have a fighting chance at the bracelet and million dollar first prize.

With the blinds 40K/80K ante 10K Allen raised to 240K and Bobby moved all-in.  Allen made the easy call with 2(2s} and Bobby showed AK.  The board ran out KJ534 and Suer spiked a king on the flop to double up to 2.4 million.

It only took until the next hand for Carter to strike back.  Suer completed the small blind, Carter checked, and the two saw a flop of K54.  Carter led out for 300K, Suer raised to 1 million even, and Carter moved all-in.  Suer thought for a while before folding and dropped back down to where he started prior to doubling up.

Early into Level 23 the pair saw a flop in another limped pot where the cards came down T63.  Suer checked, Carter bet 150K, and Suer moved all-in for his last 900K.  Carter asked for an exact count before calling with Q4 for queen high.  Suer was ahead with 64 but an 8 on the turn gave Carter a flush draw in addition to his overcard.  The J on the river was no help to Carter and Suer doubled up to 2.08 million chips.

Carter appeared to be losing his grip on this heads-up match until a hand where Suer completed the small blind and Carter raised to 420K, and Suer thought for a brief moment before moving all-in.  Carter thought for a minute or two before making the call with A4 which was behind Suer’s AK.   Both players hit the J53 flop and a 2 on the turn put Carter in the lead with a straight.  Suer could still hit a flush to win, but the river came Q and Carter was crowned the WPT Southern Poker Champion.

Here are the final results from the event:
1st:  Allen Carter  -  $1,025,500
